Ternary lanthanide indium oxides LnInO (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement of the powder patterns showed the LnInO materials to be orthorhombic perovskites belonging to the space group , based on almost-regular InO octahedra and highly distorted LnO polyhedra. Experimental structural data were compared with results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations employing a hybrid Hamiltonian. Valence region X-ray photoelectron and K-shell X-ray emission and absorption spectra of the LnInO compounds were simulated with the aid of the DFT calculations. Photoionization of lanthanide 4f orbitals gives rise to a complex final-state multiplet structure in the valence region for the 4f compounds PrInO, NdInO, and SmInO, and the overall photoemission spectral profiles were shown to be a superposition of final-state 4f terms onto the cross-section weighted partial densities of states from the other orbitals. The occupied 4f states are stabilized in moving across the series Pr-Nd-Sm. Band gaps were measured using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. These results demonstrated that the band gap of LaInO is 4.32 eV, in agreement with DFT calculations. This is significantly larger than a band gap of 2.2 eV first proposed in 1967 and based on the idea that In 4d states lie above the top of the O 2p valence band. However, both DFT and X-ray spectroscopy show that In 4d is a shallow core level located well below the bottom of the valence band. Band gaps greater than 4 eV were observed for NdInO and SmInO, but a lower gap of 3.6 eV for PrInO was shown to arise from the occupied Pr 4f states lying above the main O 2p valence band.

We report a bithiophene-based fluorescence probe BDT (2,2'-(((1 E, 1'E)-[2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5'-diylbis(methaneylylidene))bis(azaneylylidene))bis(4-(tert-butyl)phenol)) for recognizing ClO. BDT selectively responded to ClO, leading to a blue fluorescence enhancement in a mixture of DMF/HEPES buffer (9:1, v/v). Importantly, BDT showed an ultrafast response (within 1 s) to ClO among the fluorescent turn-on chemosensors based on bithiophene.

This research utilizes density functional theory to investigate the ground and excited-state properties of a new series of organic dyes with D-π-A configurations (D1-D6) for their potential application in dye-sensitized solar cells. The study focuses on modifying these dyes using various functional groups as π-bridges to optimize their electronic properties and improve their efficiency as sensitizers in DSSCs. The frontier molecular orbitals (HOMO and LUMO) were analysed to evaluate electron transfer properties.

Understanding and effectively controlling molecular conformational changes are essential for developing responsive and dynamic molecular systems. Here, we report that an oriented external electric field (OEEF) is an effective catalyst for the cis-trans isomerization of stiff-stilbene, a key component of overcrowded alkene-based rotary motors. This reversible isomerization occurs under ambient conditions, is free from side reactions, and has been verified using ultraperformance liquid chromatography and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy.

Despite tremendous progress of dienamine catalysis along with its application in enantioselective synthesis over nearly two decades, certain limitations, especially with respect to the regioselectivity in the dienamine generation step, continue to persist. To overcome these shortcomings of classical dienamine catalysis, we now introduce the concept of alkoxy-directed dienamine catalysis and apply it to the enantioselective arene construction by desymmetrizing -enediones through [4 + 2]-cycloaddition. Catalyzed by a diphenylprolinol silyl ether, this reaction utilizes γ-alkoxy α,β-unsaturated aldehydes as the substrate and proceeds in a highly regioselective fashion through the intermediacy of δ-alkoxy dienamine.

Lithium-tellurium (Li-Te) batteries are gaining attention as a promising next-generation energy storage system due to their superior electrical conductivity and high volumetric capacity compared to sulfur and selenium. Tellurium's unique properties, such as suitable redox potential, excellent conductivity, high volumetric capacity, and greatest stability, position it as a strong candidate for negative electrode materials. This study explores the potential of metal tellurides, specifically CuTe and FeTe monolayers, as effective tellurium host materials, leveraging their polar interactions with lithium polytellurides.
