Exposure to acute stressors can induce multiple physiological changes in vertebrates such as altering circulating hormone and enzyme levels as well as leukocyte counts, and interactions between endocrine and immune function may produce suites of physiological changes following acute stress. Previously, we showed that presence of human observers elicited only a weak elevation of plasma corticosterone levels in cottonmouths. Additional variables, however, must be considered to understand if changes in physiological parameters are highly generalized or vary among sexes or with context.

Blood collection is frequently used for neonatal and juvenile mice in toxicology, developmental, and immunology studies and is often a terminal procedure. However, the use of nonterminal blood collection techniques, including the submandibular and the submental collection techniques described for adult mice, may offer opportunities to reduce animal numbers and refine current methods. The use of the submental technique has not been described for neonatal or juvenile mice.

Introduction: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are underused in the elderly, regardless the evidence in their favour in this population.
Methods: We prospectively enrolled anticoagulant-naïve patients aged ≥ 75 years who started treatment with DOACs for atrial fibrillation (AF) and stratified them in older adults (aged 75-84 years) and extremely older adults (≥ 85 years). Thrombotic and hemorrhagic events were evaluated for 12 months follow-up.

Background: This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing warfarin-related major gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) and to develop a score that would provide a reference for assessing the risk of major GIB associated with warfarin treatment.
Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of clinical and follow-up data from warfarin-treated patients. Scores were analyzed using logistic regression.

Testosterone (T) regulates immune function, with both immunostimulatory and immunosuppressive effects on several vertebrates. We investigated the covariation between plasma T and corticosterone (CORT) levels and immunity (plasma bacterial killing ability (BKA), and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR)) in free-living male toads inside and outside the reproductive season. We found an overall positive correlation between steroids and immune traits, with toads during the reproductive season displaying increased T, CORT and BKA.
