Vanadium and Cadmium in Water from the Perdido Area, Northwest of the Gulf of Mexico: 2 years' Monitoring and Current Status.

Published: January 2022

Surface water samples from the Perdido study area presented Cd and V concentrations similar to those reported internationally for waters with: (1) fossil fuel extraction, processing and burning, and (2) sites polluted by anthropogenic wastewater. Results showed an order of magnitude increase in time for Cd, therefore, no general average value was established. For V, however, results of this study suggest a general average value of 1.4 µg L for the area. The observed spatial variation of concentrations could be the result of: (1) temporal variation of external inputs to the area, and coincide with previously reported hydrodynamic patterns of dispersion related to significant river contributions and accumulation areas indicative of eddy circulation or fronts. The Perdido area showed Cd and V concentrations in surface water reflective of anthropogenic impacts, while its spatial and temporal variation could depend significantly on the hydrodynamics of the area.

Transcriptional Response of Vitellogenin Gene in Flatfish to Environmental Pollutants from Two Regions of the Gulf of Mexico.

Bull Environ Contam Toxicol

December 2023

Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (CINVESTAV-IPN), Departamento de Recursos del Mar, Unidad Mérida. Km. 6 Antigua Carretera a Progreso, Apdo. Postal 73-Cordemex, Mérida, Yucatán, 97310, México.

The present study evaluates the endocrine effect in flatfish through vitellogenin (vtg) gene expression and its association with pollutants data obtained from fish muscle and sediment from two regions in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM): Perdido Fold Belt (northwestern) and the Yucatan Peninsula (southeast). The results revealed induction of vtg in male flatfish in both geographical regions with different levels and patterns of distribution per oceanographic campaign (OC). In the Perdido Fold Belt, vtg was observed in male fish during four OC (carried out in 2016 and 2017), positively associated with Pb, V, Cd and bile metabolites (hydroxynaphthalene and hydroxyphenanthrene).

Whole-body donations (n = 6) were placed in various experimental fire-death scenarios to understand the histological effects of thermal alteration on bones and teeth. Midshaft samples of the femur, 6th rib, and metatarsal were removed from each donor pre- and post-burning to examine histomorphometric differences and test established age-at-death estimation methods. Dental samples were taken post-burning to test the applicability of dental cementum analysis for age-at-death estimation.

Soy infant formula which is fed to over half a million infants per year contains isoflavones such as genistein, which have been shown to be estrogenic at high concentrations. The developing testis is sensitive to estrogens, raising concern that the use of soy formulas may result in male reproductive toxicity. In the current study, male White-Dutch Landrace piglets received either sow milk (Sow), or were provided milk formula (Milk), soy formula (Soy), milk formula supplemented with 17-beta-estradiol (2 mg/kg/d) (M + E2) or supplemented with genistein (84 mg/L of diet; (M + G) from postnatal day 2 until day 21.

Glacial Ice Age Shapes Microbiome Composition in a Receding Southern European Glacier.

Front Microbiol

November 2021

Molecular Evolution Department, Centro de Astrobiologia (CSIC-INTA), Madrid, Spain.

Glaciers and their microbiomes are exceptional witnesses of the environmental conditions from remote times. Climate change is threatening mountain glaciers, and especially those found in southern Europe, such as the Monte Perdido Glacier (northern Spain, Central Pyrenees). This study focuses on the reconstruction of the history of microbial communities over time.
