The elastic properties of crystals are fundamental for structural material. However, in the absence of macroscopic single crystals, the experimental determination of the elastic tensor is challenging because the measurement depends on the transmission of stress inside the material. To avoid arbitrary hypotheses about stress transfer, we combine hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial-stretching experiments to investigate the elastic properties of cellulose I. Three orthogonal compressibilities are 50.0, 6.6, and 1.71 TPa. Combining Poisson's ratios from a uniaxial stretching experiment directly gives the Young's modulus along the chain direction (). However, Poisson's ratio depends on the deformation rate leading to apparent modulus = 113 GPa using a slow cycle (hours) and 161 GPa using a fast cycle (minutes). The lattice deformation along the chain is not time-dependent, so the off-diagonal elements are time-dependent on the scale of minutes to hours.

The present study focuses on the ground state mechanical, acoustic, thermodynamic and electronic transport properties of NaSbS polymorphs using the density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. The mechanical stability of the polymorphs is affirmed by the calculated elastic tensor. The calculated elastic properties asserted that all the polymorphs exhibit soft, brittle, anisotropic nature containing dominant covalent bonding.

Electrically Switchable Multi-Stable Topological States Enabled by Surface-Induced Frustration in Nematic Liquid Crystal Cells.

In liquid crystal (LC) cells, the surface patterning directs the self-assembly of the uniaxial building blocks in the bulk, enabling the design of stimuli-response optical devices with various functionalities. The combination of different anchoring patterns at both substrates can lead to surface induced frustration, preventing a purely planar and defect-free configuration. In cells with crossed assembly of rotating anchoring patterns, elastic deformations allow to obtain a defect-free bulk configuration, but an electrical stimulus can induce disclination lines.

High-resolution Brillouin spectroscopy was employed to investigate the anisotropy in surface wave velocities within a bulk single crystal of SbTe, a well-known layered van der Waals material. By leveraging the bulk elastic constants derived from various simulation methods, we were able to theoretically calculate the distribution of surface acoustic phonon velocities on the cleavage plane of the material. Upon analyzing multiple simulation results, it became evident that the most significant discrepancies arose in the calculations of the elastic constant c, with values ranging from 48 to 98 GPa.

This study advances the state of the art by computing the macroscopic elastic properties of 2D periodic functionally graded microcellular materials, incorporating both isotropic and orthotropic solid phases, as seen in additively manufactured components. This is achieved through numerical homogenization and several novel MATLAB implementations (known in this study as , , , and ). The developed codes in the current work treat each cell as a material point, compute the corresponding cell elasticity tensor using numerical homogenization, and assign it to that specific point.

The Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data of Nelumbo Nucifera fibre is utilized to study multifaceted properties. Rietveld refinement was carried out along with cellulose phase. The crystallite size was computed using the Scherrer equation, and through first principle calculations, it has been illustrated and concluded that the size is not ellipsoidal, as previously suggested by other researchers; rather, it exhibits a multidimensional shape.
