Lateral line: From water waves to brain waves. | LitMetric

Lateral line: From water waves to brain waves.

Curr Biol

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH 44106, USA. Electronic address:

Published: April 2021

Fish use the highly stereotyped lateral line system to swim against a current. New research reveals that the order of the lateral line system is less important than brain response asymmetries for achieving this navigational feat.

Hidden players in the metabolic vulnerabilities of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Trends Endocrinol Metab

March 2025

Laboratories of Neurochemistry and of Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology, IRCCS, Fondazione Santa Lucia, Rome, Italy; Department of Movement, Human, and Health Sciences, University of Rome 'Foro Italico', Rome, Italy. Electronic address:

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a complex and rapidly progressive motor neuron disorder with a fatal outcome. Despite the remarkable progress in understanding ALS pathophysiology, which has significantly contributed to clinical trial design, ALS remains a rapidly disabling and life-shortening condition. The non-motor neuron features of ALS, including nutritional status, energy expenditure, and metabolic imbalance, are increasingly gaining attention.

A multiple regression model for peak skin dose using principal component analysis in interventional radiology.

Radiol Phys Technol

March 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, Division of Clinical Neuroscience, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki, 5200 Kihara Kiyotake-Cho, Miyazaki, 889-1692, Japan.

This study addresses the growing concerns of increased radiation doses to patients resulting from the increased complexity of interventional radiology procedures. Despite the importance of dose management, few facilities use dosimetry systems to measure and control patient radiation doses. To aid in patient exposure control, this research aimed to predict the peak skin dose (PSD) using dose parameters from digital imaging and communication in medicine-radiation dose structured reports.

Glymphatic dysfunction in moyamoya disease: the influence of arterial stenosis and ventricular enlargement.

Neuroimage

March 2025

Department of Radiology, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China. Electronic address:

The glymphatic system is a vascular-dependent network, involving cerebrospinal fluid circulation, that facilitates waste clearance from the brain. Although glymphatic dysfunction has been implicated in various neurologic diseases, its influencing factors are still not fully understood. We aimed to evaluate glymphatic clearance in moyamoya disease (MMD) and explore its associations with arterial stenosis and ventricular size.

Branching architecture affects genetic diversity within an individual tree.

J Theor Biol

March 2025

Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Kyushu University, 744 Motooka, Nishi-ku, Fukuoka 819-0395, Japan.

While a tree grows over many years, somatic mutations accumulate and form genetic variation among branches within an individual. Trees can transmit such mutations to subsequent generations, potentially enhancing the genetic diversity of the population. We study a mathematical model to understand the relationship between within-individual genetic variation and branching architecture.
