Published: April 2021

Measuring viscoelastic properties of soft tissues becomes a new biomarker in the medical diagnosis field. It can help in early diagnosis and related fields, such as minimally-invasive-surgery (MIS) applications and cell mechanics. The current work presents a tactile sensor for measuring the damping coefficient of the soft tissues. The proposed sensor can be miniaturized easily and used in MIS applications. Besides the proposed sensor, a mathematical model, based on Jacobsen's approach, is built to calculate the damping coefficient of the specimens and the surrounding. These damping sources significantly influence the proposed sensor, such as air damping and hysteretic damping. The sensor system principally depends on a piezoelectric transducer, which is cheap, commonly available, and easily integrated into MEMS. To conceptually prove the sensor feasibility, silicon rubber samples with different stiffnesses have been fabricated and tested by the new sensor. The obtained results prove the newly proposed sensor's capability to differentiate the damping coefficients for soft materials effectively.

Accelerated quadratic penalty dynamic approaches with applications to distributed optimization.

Pittsburgh Institute, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, 610207, China. Electronic address:

In this paper, we explore accelerated continuous-time dynamic approaches with a vanishing damping α/t, driven by a quadratic penalty function designed for linearly constrained convex optimization problems. We replace these linear constraints with penalty terms incorporated into the objective function, where the penalty coefficient grows to +∞ as t tends to infinity. With appropriate penalty coefficients, we establish convergence rates of O(1/t) for the objective residual and the feasibility violation when α>0, and demonstrate the robustness of these convergence rates against external perturbation.

Hyperballistic transport in dense systems of charged particles under ac electric fields.

The Langevin equation is ubiquitously employed to numerically simulate plasmas, colloids, and electrolytes. However, the usual assumption of white noise becomes untenable when the system is subject to an external ac electric field. This is because the charged particles in the system, which provide the thermal bath for the particle transport, become themselves responsive to the ac field and the thermal noise is field dependent and non-Markovian.

The magnetic acceleration noise (MAN) that stems from the eddy current dissipation of a test mass (TM) serves as an important source of noise for space inertial sensors. Given the problem that the eddy current dissipation magnetic acceleration noise (ECDMAN) of a cubic TM defies analytical solutions, an analytical model of ECDMAN for a spherical TM, which has the same volume as the cubic TM, is systematically derived on the basis of the principles of electromagnetism and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and this model can be used as an approximate analytical model for the evaluation of this noise term. Based on the approximate analytical model, with the TM of the LISA Pathfinder (LPF) as the research object, this paper obtains a modification coefficient using the approach of combining the analytical method with the finite element method (FEM), and establishes a semi-analytical model of ECDMAN for the cubic TM.

This study develops a dynamics model of a microrobot vibrating in a blood vessel aiming to detect potential cancer metastasis. We derive an analytical solution for microrobot's motion, considering interactions with the vessel walls modelled by a linear spring-dashpot and a constant damping value for blood viscosity. The model facilitates instantaneous state transitions of the microrobot, such as contact with the vessel wall and free motion within the fluid.

Introduction: Robot-assisted mirror therapy has been widely developed to help remodeling of premotor cortex for patients suffering from motor disability of limbs. Nevertheless, it is difficult to achieve real-time adaptive control in robot-assisted mirror rehabilitation training, particularly for patients with varying levels of limb impairment.

Methods: This paper proposes an equivalent kinematics control framework based on the Broaden Learning System model for active robotic mirror rehabilitation, where people's bilateral upper limbs actively perform mirror movements to enhance the impaired limb's participation.
