Malignancy, primary hyperparathyroidism, and vitamin D intoxication are the most common causes of hypercalcemia. Symptoms of hypercalcemia are nonspecific and require a plasma calcium level to diagnose. Undiagnosed hypercalcemia can cause renal failure long-term. Here, we describe a unique case of hypercalcemia resulting in acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to overconsumption of calcium carbonate (Tums).

Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) is a solid waste generated during the production of electrolytic manganese metal through wet metallurgy, accumulating in large quantities and causing significant environment pollution. Due to its high sulfate content, EMR can be utilized to prepare supersulfate cement when combined with Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag (GGBS). In this process, GGBS serves as the primary raw material, EMR acts as the sulfate activator, and CaO powder, along with trace amounts of cement, functions as the alkali activator.

To investigate the influence of alkali metal compounds in different forms on the sintering mineralization process of iron ore, the basic sintering characteristics of iron ore with alkali metal contents ranging from 0 to 4% were measured using the micro-sintering method, and the influence mechanism was analyzed using thermodynamic analysis and first-principles calculations. The results showed that (1) the addition of KCl/NaCl increased the lowest assimilation temperature (LAT) and the index of liquid-phase fluidity (ILF), while that of KCO/NaCO decreased the LAT but increased the ILF of iron ore. (2) The pores formed by the volatilization of KCl/NaCl suppressed the diffusion of Fe and Ca, which inhibited the formation of silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA).

Lactoferrin is a highly safe antibacterial protein found in the human body and in foods. Calcium phosphate (CaP) nanoparticles with immobilized lactoferrin could therefore be useful as intraoral disinfectants for the prevention and treatment of dental infections because CaP is a mineral component of human teeth. In this study, we fabricated CaP nanoparticles with co-immobilized lactoferrin and heparin using a simple one-step coprecipitation process.

Siderite tailings is a potentially cost-free iron (Fe) source for arsenic (As) fixation in hazardous arsenic-calcium residues (ACR) as stable scorodite. In this study, a pure siderite reagent was employed to investigate the mechanism and optimal conditions for As fixation in ACR via scorodite formation, while the waste siderite tailings were used to further demonstrate the cotreatment method. The cotreatment method starts with an introduction of sulfuric acid to the ACR for As extraction and gypsum precipitation, and is followed by the addition of HO to oxidize As(III) in the extraction solutions and finalized by adding siderite with continuous air injection for scorodite formation.
