Background/objectives: This study analyzed the quality of lunches provided in senior leisure service (SLS) facilities and compared institutional foodservice (IF) and non-institutional foodservice (non-IF).
Subjects/methods: Data of 390 adults aged 65 years or older who ate lunches in SLS facilities were analyzed using the information from the 2013-2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The participants were classified into IF (n = 129) and non-IF (n = 261) groups according to meal type provided. The intake of major food groups, energy and nutrients, and nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and mean adequacy ratio (MAR) were analyzed. The diversity of meals was evaluated by food group patterns, dietary diversity score (DDS) and dietary variety score (DVS). Energy intake was adjusted in model 1, while energy and sex were adjusted in model 2. All confounding variables were adjusted in model 3.
Results: The intake of seafoods ( < 0.001 in models 1, 2, and 3), seaweeds ( < 0.01 in models 1 and 2), and dairy products ( < 0.05 in models 1, 2, and 3) was significantly higher in the IF group. No significant difference existed in energy intake; however, the intake of all nutrients except carbohydrate and vitamin C was significantly higher in the IF group. NAR of all nutrients, excluding vitamin C, was higher in the IF group, and MAR was also higher in the IF group ( < 0.001 in models 1, 2, and 3). The IF group had significantly higher DDS and DVS than the non-IF group ( < 0.001).
Conclusions: The lunches provided in SLS facilities were better in terms of quantity and quality when provided through IF than through non-IF. More systematic foodservice programs should be implemented in SLS facilities, especially in facilities wherein users prepare their own meals.

Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS) is an autosomal recessive leukodystrophy characterized by ichthyosis, intellectual disability, and progressive spastic paralysis caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the ALDH3A2 gene that encodes the fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase, fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase (FALDH); FALDH catalyzes several metabolic reactions involved in fatty aldehyde oxidation. Only a few studies have been performed to determine the lipid profile of patients with SLS. In a previous postmortem study of the brain of a 65-year-old patient with SLS, lipidomic analysis revealed an accumulation of long-chain unsaturated ether lipid species in the white matter and gray matter.

We assessed effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an integrated care model for treating major depressive disorder in Malawi, accounting for two sets of positive externalities: household benefits and improvements in comorbidities.
Methods: In this stepped-wedge, cluster-randomised, controlled trial, 14 health facilities in Neno District, Malawi, introduced screening, diagnosis, and treatment for people with major depressive disorder, using a stepped-care model of group Problem Management Plus and antidepressant therapy.

screening of large compound libraries with automated high-throughput screening is expensive and time-consuming and requires dedicated infrastructures. Conversely, the selection of DNA-encoded chemical libraries (DECLs) can be rapidly performed with routine equipment available in most laboratories. In this study, we identified novel inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2 main protease (M) through the affinity-based selection of the DELopen library (open access for academics), containing 4.

Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods (NRs) were grown hydrothermally on the wide bandgap (∼3.86 - 4.04 eV) seed layers (SLs) of grain size ∼162 ± 35 nm, prepared using ball-milled derived ZnO powder.

Multiple whale-watching vessels may operate around cetaceans at any one time, and targeted animals may experience underwater noise effects. We hypothesised that the cumulative noise of two vessels with low source levels (SLs) will elicit lower behavioural disturbance in short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) compared to a single vessel with a higher SL. We measured the behaviour of whales during 26 controls (stationary vessel >300 m) and 44 treatments off Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain).
