Background: Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricular system due to various causes, including excessive CSF production, impaired circulation, or absorption dysfunction. This condition is often accompanied by ventricular enlargement, compression of brain parenchyma, and increased intracranial pressure. Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting is the first-line treatment for hydrocephalus; however, when the peritoneal catheter becomes obstructed due to encapsulation, the procedure may need to be converted to a ventriculoatrial (VA) shunt, which serves as a second-line treatment.

Cardiac damage after polytrauma: the role of systematic transthoracic echocardiography - a pilot study.

World J Emerg Surg

March 2025

Department of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics, Goethe University Frankfurt, University Hospital, 60590, Frankfurt, Germany.

Background: Heart injuries following polytrauma (PT) are identified as a predictor of poor outcome. The diagnostic algorithm of cardiac damage after trauma consists of the systemic measurement of cardiac damage markers, a 3-channel ECG and if there are any suspicious findings, the conduction of a transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). The aim of this study was to implement a systematic analysis of cardiac function using TTE in PT-patients.

The left atrioventricular coupling index (LACI) evaluates the coupling function between the left atrial (LA) and left ventricular (LV) chambers. However, little is known about LACI in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. This study aimed to assess the impact of concurrent CKD and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on left atrioventricular coupling function compared to CKD patients without T2DM.

Impaired myocardial deformation and aortic distensibility by cardiac MRI in girls with Turner syndrome.

Sci Rep

March 2025

Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, 12 El-Gomhoreya street, 35112, Mansoura, Egypt.

Girls and women with Turner syndrome (TS) suffer from increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. We hypothesized that left ventricular (LV) myocardial strain and aortic elasticity will be impaired in girls with TS. Cardiac MRI of 45 girls with TS and 14 healthy control girls was performed.

Progesterone receptors are classified into nuclear and membrane-bound receptor families. Previous unbiased proteomic studies indicate a potential association between cardiac diseases and the progesterone receptor membrane-bound component-2 (PGRMC2); however, the role of PGRMC2 in the heart remains unknown. In this study, we use a heart-specific knockout (KO) mouse model (MyH6•Pgrmc2) in which the Pgrmc2 gene was selectively deleted in cardiomyocytes.
