Natural and modified versions of the 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase () gene have been used to confer tolerance to the broad-spectrum herbicide glyphosate in a variety of commercial crops. The most widely utilized trait was obtained from the strain CP4 and has been commercialized in several glyphosate-tolerant crops. The EPSPS gene products are enzymes that have been divided into three classes based on sequence similarity, sensitivity to glyphosate, and steady-state catalytic parameters. Herein, we describe the informatics-guided identification and biochemical and structural characterization of a novel EPSPS from (DGT-28 EPSPS). The data suggest DGT-28 EPSPS and other closely related homologues exemplify a distinct new class (Class IV) of EPSPS enzymes that display intrinsic tolerance to high concentrations of glyphosate ( ≥ 5000 μM). We further demonstrate that , when transformed into stable plants, provides robust (≥4× field rates) vegetative/reproductive herbicide tolerance and has utility in weed-control systems comparable to that of commercialized events.

The lamprey, a primitive jawless vertebrate whose ancestors diverged from all other vertebrates over 500 million years ago, offers a unique window into the ancient formation of the retina. Using single-cell RNA-sequencing, we characterize retinal cell types in the lamprey and compare them to those in mouse, chicken, and zebrafish. We find six cell classes and 74 distinct cell types, many shared with other vertebrate species.

Geometric frustration in two-dimensional Ising models allows for a wealth of exotic universal behavior, both Ising and non-Ising, in the presence of quantum fluctuations. In particular, the triangular antiferromagnet and Villain model in a transverse field can be understood through distinct XY pseudospins, but have qualitatively similar phase diagrams including a quantum phase transition in the (2+1)-dimensional XY universality class. While the quantum dynamics of modestly-sized systems can be simulated classically using tensor-based methods, these methods become infeasible for larger lattices.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials that are of topical interest for their utility in water-related applications. Nevertheless, molecular-level insight into water-MOF interactions and MOF hydrolytic reactivity remains understudied. Herein, we report two hydrolytic pathways leading to either structural stability or framework decomposition of a MOF (ZnMOF-1).

is a pathogenic bacterium widely distributed in the environment, with increasing concerns about multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains in riverine systems. In this study, we assessed the antibiotic resistance of 50 isolates from surface water samples collected at seven distinct sites along the Buriganga River. Antibiotic sensitivity was tested using the Kirby-Bauer Disk Diffusion method.

Oligonucleotides are currently one of the most rapidly advancing classes of therapeutic modalities. Understanding critical quality attributes, such as the impurity profile, stability, potential metabolites, and sequence conformity, is the key to their ultimate success. To obtain the information presented above, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is often employed.
