Background: Radioactive iodine (RAI) is considered the gold standard treatment for feline hyperthyroidism. Currently exposure limits to radiation are regulated by national legislation, therefore the length of the isolation period in hospital for cats receiving radioactive treatment varies according to the place where the radioactive facility is located. The aim of this study was to establish when retained radioactivity decreases in cats receiving subcutaneous I-131 to a level that would allow discharge of cats from the hospital while being compliant with current United Kingdom legislation.
Methods: Clinical records of cats treated with subcutaneous I-131 were retrospectively reviewed. Radioactive emission rates were measured using an external probe. Retained radioactivity below 11 MBq at the point of discharge was required by the initial risk assessment to ensure that a 0.3 mSv dose constraint was maintained for owners following standard cat-owner contact restrictions. Average retained activity for each treatment regimen at the time of discharge was calculated. The biological half-life for iodine retention was also calculated.
Results: Overall, an end activity below 11 MBq was reached at day 11 in 49% of cats, and at day 13 in 91% of cats. These cats were allowed to be discharged according to UK legislation, as long as contact restrictions were applied at home for 2 weeks.
Conclusion: Based on our study, an isolation period of 13 days before allowing discharge of cats treated with subcutaneous RAI (I-131) is compliant with current UK legislation.

The basic requirements for the development of radiopharmaceuticals for radionuclide therapy of tumors include marked tumor-specific accumulation and long-term intratumoral retention. We have previously reported an indium-111 (In)-labeled thermoresponsive polymer (polyoxazoline (POZ)) that is soluble at body temperature with rapid clearance from normal tissues but self-aggregates in the tumor upon tumor heating treatment. POZ accumulated in the tumor via self-aggregation under hyperthermic conditions and was retained after stopping heat exposure.

This study examines the contamination levels and sources of 32 metals and metalloids (MMs) in environmental compartments (roadside soil, road dust, and river suspended sediments) of a small urbanized river catchment located in Moscow megacity. MMs partitioning between particle size fractions (PM, PM, and PM) was analyzed by ICP-MS and ICP-AES methods. The pollution level of particle size fractions with MMs decreases in the following series: road dust > suspended sediments > soils.

Background: Folate receptor alpha (FRα) overexpression is seen in many cancers. Radioligand therapy (RLT) has emerged as a promising tool to target FRα and has been investigated previously, but further progression was limited due to high kidney retention and, subsequently, toxicity. To circumvent this, we present here the development of a [I]I-GMIB-conjugated anti-human FRα (hFRα) single-domain antibody (sdAb), with intrinsically fast renal clearance and concomitant low kidney retention.

Recently, hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) has garnered significant attention for its potential in the selective extraction of cesium (Cs) from radioactive wastewater and salt lakes, which is crucial for resolving the supply-demand imbalance of cesium resources and eliminating radioactive contamination. However, developing HCDI electrodes capable of effectively separating and extracting Cs remains a significant challenge. In this work, we proposed an innovative strategy involving the doping of inactive metal ions to develop zinc-doped manganese hexacyanoferrate (ZMFC) as an HCDI cathode.

Patients with intermediate-risk thyroid cancers may undergo treatment with radioactive iodine-131 (I-131). They often undergo a pretreatment diagnostic iodine scan that typically shows areas of physiological uptake in the stomach, bladder, parotid glands as well as thyroid-remnant uptake and sites of metastatic disease. A 48-year-old woman with intermediate-risk papillary thyroid cancer with metastases to lateral compartment lymph nodes was found to have increased retention of iodine in the medial portion of her left orbit on the diagnostic scan.
