The world contains not only objects and features (red apples, glass bowls, wooden tables), but also relations holding between them (apples contained in bowls, bowls supported by tables). Representations of these relations are often developmentally precocious and linguistically privileged; but how does the mind extract them in the first place? Although relations themselves cast no light onto our eyes, a growing body of work suggests that even very sophisticated relations display key signatures of automatic visual processing. Across physical, eventive, and social domains, relations such as support, fit, cause, chase, and even socially interact are extracted rapidly, are impossible to ignore, and influence other perceptual processes. Sophisticated and structured relations are not only judged and understood, but also seen - revealing surprisingly rich content in visual perception itself.

Globally, more than 100 countries have adopted net-zero targets. Most studies agree on how this increases the chance of keeping end-of-century global warming below 2°C. However, they typically make assumptions about net-zero targets that do not capture uncertainties related to gas coverage, sector coverage, sinks, and removals.

Although the corticosteroid betamethasone is routinely administered to accelerate lung and cardiovascular maturation in the preterm fetus prior to birth, and use of delayed cord clamping (DCC) is recommended at birth by professional bodies, it is unknown whether antenatal betamethasone alters perinatal pulmonary or systemic arterial blood flow accompaniments of DCC. To address this issue, preterm fetal lambs [gestation 127 (1) days, term = 147 days] with (n = 10) or without (n = 10) antenatal betamethasone treatment were acutely instrumented under general anaesthesia with flow probes to obtain left (LV) and right ventricular (RV) outputs, major central arterial blood flows and shunt flow across both the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale (FO). After delivery, lambs underwent initial ventilation for 2 min prior to DCC.

Live-cell metabolic analyzer protocol for measuring glucose and lactate metabolic changes in human cells.

Understanding metabolic conditions related to glycolysis dependence is crucial for developing new treatments in cancer and regenerative medicine. This protocol details a method for using the live-cell metabolic analyzer (LiCellMo) to measure continuous changes in glucose consumption and lactate production in cultured human cells. LiCellMo provides real-time data on consecutive metabolic changes, improving measurements of these processes in various contexts, including in cancer and regenerative treatments.

Ergosterol alleviates hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance via promoting fatty acid β-oxidation by activating mitochondrial ACSL1.

Sterols target sterol-sensing domain (SSD) proteins to lower cholesterol and circulating and hepatic triglyceride levels, but the mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we identify acyl-coenzyme A (CoA) synthetase long-chain family member 1 (ACSL1) as a direct target of ergosterol (ES). The C-terminal domain of ACSL1 undergoes conformational changes from closed to open, and ES may target the drug-binding pocket in the acetyl-CoA synthetase-like domain 1 (ASLD1) of ACSL1 to stabilize the closed conformation and maintain its activity.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal which induces vascular disorders. Previous studies suggest that Cd in the bloodstream affects vascular endothelial cells (ECs), potentially contributing to vascular-related diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms of effects of Cd on ECs remain poorly understood.
