Most organisms possess endogenous circadian clocks that synchronise their physiology and behaviour with environmental cycles, with the light-dark (LD) cycle being the most potent synchronising signal. Consequently, it can be hypothesised that animals that have evolved in the dark, as in caves or deep sea, may no longer possess a functional light-entrained biological clock. In this research, the blind cavefish Astyanax mexicanus was selected as a model organism to investigate the potential effects of daily light conditions on the circadian timekeeping mechanisms.

Blue light-driven cell cycle arrest in thyroid cancer via Retinal-OPN3 complex.

Cell Commun Signal

November 2024

Department of Endocrinology, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, School of Life Science and Technology, China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing, 211198, China.

Background: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid malignancy, with a rising incidence. Traditional treatments, such as thyroidectomy and radiotherapy, often lead to significant side effects, including impaired thyroid function. Therefore, there is an urgent need for non-invasive therapeutic approaches.

UVA radiation, a primary risk factor in melanoma progression, partly acts through the mediation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The role of ROS in driving cutaneous melanoma toward an invasive phenotype and whether it occurs through opsins (OPNs), which are photosensitive G protein-coupled receptors, is not fully understood. This study focuses on the impact of UVA radiation on melanoma cell proliferation, with a special emphasis on OPN3.

The role of circadian rhythm genes (CRGs) in gastric cancer (GC) is poorly understood. This study aimed to develop a CRG signature to improve understanding of prognosis and immunotherapy responses in GC patients. We integrated the The Cancer Genome Atlas-Stomach adenocarcinoma (TCGA-STAD) dataset with CRGs to develop a prognostic signature for GC.

The Pigmentation of Blue Light Is Mediated by Both Melanogenesis Activation and Autophagy Inhibition through OPN3-TRPV1.

J Invest Dermatol

Molecular Dermatology Laboratory, Department of Integrative Biotechnology, College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Sungkyunkwan University, Suwon, Korea. Electronic address:

Blue light, a high-energy radiation in the visible light spectrum, was recently reported to induce skin pigmentation. In this study, we investigated the involvement of TRPV1-mediated signaling along with OPN3 in blue light-induced melanogenesis as well as its signaling pathway. Operating downstream target of OPN3 in blue light-induced melanogenesis, blue light activated TRPV1 and upregulated its expression, resulting in calcium influx.
