Black root rot (BRR) is an economically important disease of cotton and other crops, especially in cooler regions with short growing seasons. Symptoms include black discoloration of the roots, reduced number of lateral roots and stunted or slow plant growth. The cultivated tetraploid Gossypium species are susceptible to BRR. Resistance to BRR was identified in accession BM13H and is associated with reduced and restricted hyphal growth and less sporulation. Transcriptome analysis indicates that BM13H responds to infection at early time points 2- and 3-days post-inoculation, but by day 5, few differentially expressed genes are observed between infected and uninfected roots. Inheritance of BM13H resistance to BRR was evaluated in an F recombinant inbred population and shows a single semi-dominant locus conferring resistance that was fine mapped to a region on chromosome 1, containing ten genes including five putative resistance-like genes.

Virtual focus groups were conducted in English and in French to gather community feedback on colorectal cancer screening education materials, designed for use among immigrant and non-immigrant Black/African-American men in New York City. Participants were recruited from community health fair events, religious and cultural organizations, and an existing Community Advisory Board. Six total focus groups were conducted, four in English and two in French, with a total of 25 participants, until data saturation.

Root growth and development are contingent upon continuous cell division and differentiation in root tips. In this study, we found that the knockdown of the syntaxin gene () in resulted in a significant reduction in root meristem activity and disruption of root stem cell niche (SCN) identity. The knockdown mutant exhibits a compromised SCN characterized by an increased number of quiescent center (QC) cells, abnormal columella stem cells (CSCs), reduced meristem size, and subsequent inhibition of root growth.

The Live Well Allegheny-Lifting Wellness for African Americans (LWA2) Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) Initiative was created to address racial health disparities in chronic disease, as well as structural determinants and systems of oppression at their root, among the Black community in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (PA). LWA-REACH implemented active transportation projects focused on predominantly Black neighborhoods. In doing so, LWA-REACH enabled-for Allegheny County-a first-of-its-kind connection between two county departments-economic development and the health department-and Black priority communities in the Monongahela River Valley and the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA.
