The effects of titanium (Ti) ion-implanted doses on the chemical composition, surface roughness, mechanical properties, as well as tribological properties of 316L austenitic stainless steel are investigated in this paper. The Ti ion implantations were carried out at an energy of 40 kV and at 2 mA for different doses of 3.0 × 10, 1.0 × 10, 1.0 × 10, and 1.7 × 10 ions/cm. The results showed that a new phase (CrTi) was detected, and the concentrations of Ti and C increased obviously when the dose exceeded 1.0 × 10 ions/cm. The surface roughness can be significantly reduced after Ti ion implantation. The nano-hardness increased from 3.44 to 5.21 GPa at a Ti ion-implanted dose increase up to 1.0 × 10 ions/cm. The friction coefficient decreased from 0.78 for un-implanted samples to 0.68 for a sample at the dose of 1.7 × 10 ions/cm. The wear rate was slightly improved when the sample implanted Ti ion at a dose of 1.0 × 10 ions/cm. Adhesive wear and oxidation wear are the main wear mechanisms, and a slightly abrasive wear is observed during sliding. Oxidation wear was improved significantly as the implantation dose increased.

This study explores the preparation of lubricating oleo-dispersions using electrospun nanofibrous mats made from low-sulfonate lignin (LSL) and polycaprolactone (PCL). The rheological and tribological properties of the oleo-dispersions were significantly modulated for the first time through the exploration of LSL/PCL ratio and electrospinning conditions such as applied voltage, distance between the tip and collector, flow rate, ambient humidity, and collector configuration. Adequate uniform ultrathin fibers and Small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) functions of the oleo-dispersions, with storage modulus values ranging from 10 to 10 Pa at 25 °C, were obtained with a flow rate of 0.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Dalian Maritime University, Dalian 116026, PR China; Dalian Key Laboratory of Internal Combustion Engine Tribology and Reliability Engineering, Dalian 116026, PR China. Electronic address:

As a global challenge, marine biofouling is causing serious economic losses and adverse ecological impacts. In recent years, a variety of promising and environmentally friendly anti-fouling strategies have emerged, among which the excellent anti-fouling performance of bionic autocrine coatings has been recognized. However, bionic autocrine coatings still suffer from uncontrollable secretion behavior, poor mechanical stability, and poor abrasion resistance.

The focus on energy efficiency to move towards a more sustainable use of resources has intensified efforts to minimize friction and wear in mechanical systems, which account for 23% of the world's energy consumption. In this study, polyoxometalate ionic liquids (POM-ILs) are introduced as environmentally acceptable lubricant additives, for their potential friction-reducing and anti-wear (AW) properties. These compounds, characterized by their complex structures and tunable properties, have been investigated for their tribological performance across base fluids of varying polarities.

Tribomechanical Properties of Glazes for Ceramic Tiles: A Novel Protocol for Their Characterization.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM), University of Bologna, Via Terracini 28, 40131 Bologna, Italy.

The aim of the work is to design and validate a characterization protocol for glazes used in the ceramic tile industry to lead manufacturers and researchers towards the formulation of glazes with enhanced wear resistance properties. The focus of the protocol is addressed to determine surface parameters that strongly depend on glaze formulation and firing temperature. This protocol includes analytical (e.

Faculty of Civil Engineering, Mechanics and Petrochemistry, Warsaw University of Technology, 09-400 Płock, Poland.

This article compares the rheological and tribological properties of three ionic liquids: Tributyl(methyl)phosphonium dimethyl phosphate 97%-MFCD, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate 97%-BMIMPF6, and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate 98%-BMIMBF4. Their density and kinematic viscosity at 20 °C and 40 °C were investigated, and tribological tests were carried out at the same temperatures with ball-on-disc contact. The test materials were made of 100Cr6 steel.
