Lipophilic tocols, γ-oryzanol, and coixenolide in coix seed before and after fermentation by were determined. Antioxidant and anticancer activities of raw and fermented coix seed were evaluated using free-radical-scavenging assays and polyunsaturated fatty acid oxidation model, and human laryngeal carcinoma cell HEp2, respectively. Compared to the raw seed, the tocols, γ-oryzanol, and coixenolide contents increased approximately 4, 25, and 2 times, respectively, in the fermented coix seed. Especially, γ-tocotrienol and γ-oryzanol reached 72.5 and 655.0 μg/g in the fermented coix seed. The lipophilic extract from fermented coix seed exhibited higher antioxidant activity in scavenging free radicals and inhibiting lipid oxidation. The inhibitory concentrations for 50% cell survival (IC) of lipophilic extract from fermented coix seed in inhibiting HEp2 cells decreased by 42%. This study showed that coix seed fermented by increased free and readily bioavailable lipophilic antioxidants and anticancer activity. Therefore, fermentation could enhance the efficacy of the health promoting function of coix seeds.

A manganese porphyrin wrapped DNA dendrimer (Mn-DD) was developed through enzyme-free DNA self-assembly and simple and mild groove binding of porphyrin. The Mn-DD not only possessed plenty of manganese porphyrin to amplify the chemiluminescence (CL) signal, but also can be modified with diverse groups via DNA hybridization. Combined with an immunosensor array, Mn-DD can be utilized for CL immunoassay of multiple mycotoxins as a universal tag.

Chang-Wei-Qing (CWQ) is a widely recognized Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulation composed of Astragalus, Codonopsis, Atractylodes, Poria, Coix seed, Akebia trifoliata Koidz, Sargentodoxa cuneata, and Vitis quinquangularis Rehd. This formulation has garnered significant interest for its positive effects in mitigating colorectal cancer, and when combined with PD-1, it affects some gut microbiota associated with tumor infiltrating lymphocytes cells. However, the biological rationale underlying the suppression of colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) in AOM/DSS-treated mice by CWQ combined with PD-1 inhibitor remains to be explored.

The transfer of natural antioxidants from feed to milk has become a research hotspot. Polyphenols are a source of potent natural antioxidants that may play important roles in improving antioxidant activity and milk quality in dairy goats. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of polyphenol-rich Coix seed extract (CSE) on rumen fermentation, milk production, fatty acid profile, antioxidant activity, and polyphenol content in milk from lactating dairy goats.

Coix seed-natto (CS-natto) is a nutritious food rich in various functional components such as nattokinase (NK), and the strains' fermentation is crucial for enhancing its quality. This work utilized Bacillus natto GUTU09 (B9) and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BLH1 or BLH6 to ferment soybeans that were soaked in a saccharified liquid made from CS, resulting in the preparation of CS-natto, studied the physicochemical and functional characteristics during fermentation, and analyzed the correlation of various indicators.

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is a vision-threatening condition associated with retinal-detachment (RD), primarily caused by fibrocellular scar membrane formation. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of adlay seed extract fractions in mitigating PVR-associated pathways, focusing on oxidative stress, proliferation, inflammation, and fibrogenesis in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Adlay seed extract fractions (methanolic: MeOH and residual: Res) were obtained through solvent extraction and characterized for carbohydrate, protein, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity.
