Green chrysanthemums are difficult to breed but have high commercial value. The molecular basis for the green petal color in chrysanthemum is not fully understood. This was investigated in the present study by RNA sequencing analysis of white and green ray florets collected at three stages of flower development from the F progeny of the cross between "Lüdingdang" with green-petaled flowers and with white-petaled flowers. The chlorophyll content was higher and chloroplast degradation was slower in green pools than in white pools at each developmental stage. Transcriptome analysis revealed that genes that were differentially expressed between the two pools were enriched in pathways related to chlorophyll metabolism and photosynthesis. We identified the transcription factor genes , , , and as regulators of the green flower color in chrysanthemum by differential expression analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis. These findings can guide future efforts to improve the color palette of chrysanthemum flowers through genetic engineering.

Flower color is an important character of ornamental plants and one of the main target traits for variety innovation. We previously identified a CmMYB6 epigenetic allele that affects the flower color in chrysanthemum, and changes in flower color are caused by the DNA methylation level of this gene. However, it is still unknown which DNA methyltransferases are involved in modifying the DNA methylation levels of this gene.

Article Synopsis
  • Pink rot, a disease caused by the oomycete Phytophthora erythroseptica, severely impacts potato crops, with notable increases in infection rates reported in San Luis Valley, Colorado in 2023.
  • Infected tubers showed visible symptoms, including dark discoloration and subsequent salmon-pink coloration when cut, with significant infection percentages in two potato cultivars, Russet Norkotah and Canela Russet.
  • DNA extraction and PCR tests confirmed the presence of P. erythroseptica in symptomatic tubers, and successful isolation of the pathogen was achieved using selective media techniques, further tested on sterilized potato tubers.

Chrysanthemum (, ground-cover Chrysanthemums), one of the important garden flowers, has a high ornamental and economic value. However, its ornamental value is significantly diminished by the low temperature experienced in northeastern China. Here, metabolomics and transcriptomics were performed on three Chrysanthemum cultivars before and after a low temperature to investigate the dynamic metabolite changes and the molecular regulatory mechanisms.
