Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), a precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), induces disease resistance to the Fusarium head blight fungus in and barley, but it is unknown at which stage of the infection it acts. Since the rate of haustorial formation of an obligate biotrophic barley powdery mildew fungus f. sp. () was significantly reduced in NMN-treated coleoptile epidermal cells, the possibility that NMN induces resistance to the biotrophic stage of was investigated. The results show that NMN treatment caused the wandering of hyphal growth and suppressed the formation of appressoria-like structures. Furthermore, we developed an experimental system to monitor the early stage of infection in real-time and analyzed the infection behavior. We observed that the hyphae elongated windingly by NMN treatment. These results suggest that NMN potentiates resistance to the biotrophic invasion of as well as .

Unlabelled: Apple bitter rot is caused by various Colletotrichum spp. that threaten apple production globally resulting in millions of dollars in damage annually. The fungus causes a decline in fruit quality and yield, eventually rotting the fruit and rendering it inedible.

Southern corn rust (SCR), caused by the obligate biotrophic fungus Underw., represents one of the most devastating threats to maize production, potentially resulting in yield losses exceeding 50%. Due to global climate change and cropping practices, epiphytotics of SCR have been increasingly reported, and are progressively spreading from tropical and subtropical maize growing areas to higher latitude areas.

Chitosan (CS), derived from the partial deacetylation and hydrolysis of chitin, varies in the degree of deacetylation, molecular weight, and origin, influencing its biological effects, including antifungal properties. In plants, CS triggers immune responses and stimulates biomass growth. Previously, we found that the antifungal activity of CS was strongly dependent on its physicochemical properties.

Plants frequently confront pathogens that disrupt physiological and molecular functions, ultimately reducing agricultural yields. To counter these challenges, plants activate sophisticated defense mechanisms to recognize stress signals while optimizing growth. Phytohormones signaling pathways and their crosstalk are central to regulating plant growth, development and defense.
