Simulations over eight years of continuous surface oil spills around Cuba are carried out to identify the most likely stranding (beaching) locations. The open source Lagrangian oil drift model OpenOil is applied with high resolution hydrodynamic forcing. The actual fraction of the released oil mass reaching different regions is calculated, revealing small differences between a light and a heavy crude oil type. Similar stranding rates for the two oil types are found. Another important conclusion is that, due to the high temporal variability in stranding rates, short term simulations of a few weeks are not suitable to assess environmental risk. The highest stranding rates are simulated in winter in Northern Cuba. It is also found that oil could reach Northern Cuba, Yucatan or Florida in about 3-5 days after a spill.

Since 2011, massive strandings of Sargassum (brown alga) have significantly affected Caribbean islands causing major health, environmental and economic problems. Amongst them, the degradation of algae releases corrosive gases, hydrogen sulphide (HS) and ammonia (NH) which causes an accelerated corrosion of the metallic structures of these coastal areas. The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of Sargassum strandings on the corrosion of three types of steels (DC01 carbon steel, 304L and 316L stainless steels) immersed for up to 120 days at various sites in Martinique which were gradually impacted by Sargassum.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) constitute a heterogeneous group of tumors that originate from mesenchymal cells. Imaging plays an important role in the assessment of the oncological stage of STSs. Computed tomography findings facilitate the identification of the tumor location and margins in relation to the surrounding anatomic boundaries and thereby enable preoperative planning of tumor management.

Improving our understanding of energy allocation in reproduction is key for accurately parameterizing bioenergetic models to assess population responses to environmental perturbations and anthropogenic disturbance. We quantified the energetic cost of gestation in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) using historical whaling records, non-invasive unoccupied aerial system (UAS) photogrammetry and post mortem tissue samples. First, we estimated relative birth size using body length measurements of 678 mother-fetus pairs from historical whaling records and 987 mother-calf pairs measured in situ using UAS-photogrammetry.

Introduction And Importance: Primary anorectal melanoma (ARM) is a rare neoplasm with an extremely poor prognosis. It represents less than 1 % of all melanomas and accounts for less than 1 % of anorectal malignancies. We report a case of anorectal primary melanoma treated surgically.

Harbour seals () are the most common pinniped species in the Wadden Sea of Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg and Lower Saxony, Germany. Their numbers have recovered after significant depletion due to viral outbreaks and effects of anthropogenic activities like pollution and habitat disturbance. Within the Wadden Sea National Park of Lower Saxony the harbour seal is protected.
