Amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of hyperphosphorylated tau are important contributors to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Tau also impacts pancreatic beta cell function and glucose homeostasis. Amyloid deposits composed of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) are a pathological feature of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The current study investigates the role of human tau (hTau) in combination with human IAPP (hIAPP) as a potential mechanism connecting AD and T2D. Transgenic mice expressing hTau and hIAPP in the absence of murine tau were generated to determine the impact of these pathological factors on glucose metabolism. Co-expression of hIAPP and hTau resulted in mice with increased hyperglycaemia, insulin resistance, and glucose intolerance. The hTau-hIAPP mice also exhibited reduced beta cell area, increased amyloid deposition, impaired insulin processing, and reduced insulin content in islets. Tau phosphorylation also increased after stimulation with high glucose. In addition, brain insulin content and signalling were reduced, and tau phosphorylation was increased in these animals. These data support a link between tau and IAPP amyloid, which seems to act co-ordinately to impair beta cell function and glucose homeostasis, and suggest that the combined pathological actions of these proteins may be a potential mechanism connecting AD and T2D. © 2021 The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Background: Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) and its related vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) may play a significant role in atherosclerosis and their targeting is a strategic approach that may affect multiple pathways influencing disease progression. This study aimed to perform a systematic review to reveal current evidence on the role of HIF-1α and VEGF immunophenotypes with other prognostic markers as potential biomarkers of atherosclerosis prognosis and treatment efficacy.
Methods: We performed a systematic review of the current literature to explore the role of HIF-1α and VEGF protein expression along with the relation to the prognosis and therapeutic strategies of atherosclerosis.

Carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) involved in the degradation of plant cell walls and/or the assimilation of plant carbohydrates for energy uptake are widely distributed in microorganisms. In contrast, they are less frequent in animals, although there are exceptions, including examples of CAZymes acquired by horizontal gene transfer (HGT) from bacteria or fungi in several of phytophagous arthropods and plant-parasitic nematodes. Although the whitefly Bemisia tabaci is a major agricultural pest, knowledge of HGT-acquired CAZymes in this phloem-feeding insect of the Hemiptera order (subfamily Aleyrodinae) is still lacking.

Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) protection represents an unmet need in glaucoma. This study assessed the neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effect of a new nutraceutical formulation named Epicolin, based on citicoline, homotaurine, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, forskolin, and vitamins, through in vitro and in vivo studies. The neuroprotective effect of Epicolin or its single components, and Epicolin compared to an untreated control and two marketed formulations [Formulation G (FG) and N (FN)], was evaluated in neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) challenged with staurosporine.
