Department of Human Development Nursing Science, University of Illinois Chicago, College of Nursing, Chicago, IL, USA.

Background: Menstruators facing period poverty often struggle with menstrual hygiene and waste management, which can result in harmful short- and long-term health outcomes such as urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and vulvar contact dermatitis. Research indicates that 42% of menstruators in the United States have difficulty affording period products. Traditional methods of distributing period products through social services may unintentionally undermine menstruators' agency, leading to disempowerment and inefficient resource allocation.

Article Synopsis
  • Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare skin condition primarily found in areas like the vulva and axilla, and it’s often misdiagnosed, leading to a delayed diagnosis of about two years.
  • A unique case of a 78-year-old man with EMPD in the axilla revealed an underlying adenocarcinoma, highlighted by a painful, red plaque that did not respond to initial treatments.
  • The diagnosis was confirmed through biopsy, showing atypical gland proliferation, and treatment involved wide local excision; there are only 14 known cases of axillary EMPD linked to adenocarcinoma, which aids in recognizing and managing future instances.
