Olfactory deficits in aging and Alzheimer's-spotlight on inhibitory interneurons.

Front Neurosci

December 2024

Institute of Physiology, RG Neurophysiology and Optogenetics, Medical Faculty, Otto-von-Guericke-University, Magdeburg, Germany.

Cognitive function in healthy aging and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease (AD) correlates to olfactory performance. Aging and disease progression both show marked olfactory deficits in humans and rodents. As a clear understanding of what causes olfactory deficits is still missing, research on this topic is paramount to diagnostics and early intervention therapy.

We present the case of a 42-year-old Indian male with prurigo nodularis, exhibiting multiple verrucous, brownish-black nodules on the left lower and right upper extremities, with milder involvement of the right lower extremity. The lesions were asymmetrically distributed in a near-linear pattern, with prominent white hyperkeratosis and associated moderate pruritus and paresthesia. Differential diagnoses included pemphigoid nodularis, verruca vulgaris, and hypertrophic lichen planus, with a biopsy confirming prurigo nodularis.

The mechanism of autoreduction in Dehaloperoxidase-A.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, 27695, USA. Electronic address:

Hemoglobin and myoglobin are known to undergo autoxidation, in which the oxyferrous form of the heme is oxidized to the ferric state by O. Dehaloperoxidase-A (DHP-A), a multifunctional catalytic hemoglobin from Amphitrite ornata is an exception and is observed to undergo the reverse process, during which the ferric heme is spontaneously reduced to the oxyferrous form under aerobic conditions. The high reduction potential of DHP (+202 mV at pH 7.

Frustrated Magnetism and Spin Anisotropy in a Buckled Square Net YbTaO.

Inorg Chem

December 2024

School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia 30332, United States.

The interplay between quantum effects from magnetic frustration, low-dimensionality, spin-orbit coupling, and crystal electric field in rare-earth materials leads to nontrivial ground states with unusual magnetic excitations. Here, we investigate YbTaO, which hosts a buckled square net of Yb ions with = 1/2 moments. The observed Curie-Weiss temperature is about -1 K, implying an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Yb moments.

Effect of Monosaccharides Including Rare Sugars on the Bilayer Phase Behavior of Dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine.

Membranes (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Bioengineering, Division of Bioscience and Bioindustry, Graduate School of Technology, Industrial and Social Sciences, Tokushima University, 2-1 Minamijosanjima-cho, Tokushima 770-8513, Japan.

We observed bilayer phase transitions of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) in aqueous solutions of four kinds of monosaccharides, namely, D-glucose, D-fructose, D-allose and D-psicose, using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). D-allose (C3-epimer of D-glucose) and D-psicose (C3-epimer of D-fructose) are rare sugars. We performed DSC measurements using two types of sugar-containing sample dispersions of the DMPC vesicles: one is a normal sample dispersion with no concentration asymmetry between the inside and outside of the vesicles and the other is an unusual sample dispersion with a concentration asymmetry.
