DNA can fold into noncanonical left-handed Z-DNA conformation beyond the right-handed B-DNA. While its crystal structure was discovered nearly four decades ago, it was predominantly considered a structural curiosity. Recent evidence suggests that Z-DNA formation occurs in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), with significant biological implications.

Despite widespread attempts from governments and leading health organisations worldwide to promote equity in healthy living medicine, the evidence suggests that attempts to curb worsening public health have been almost entirely ineffective. Despite significant advancements in knowledge, medicine, and technology, as well as the promotion of guidelines and the implementation of numerous global initiatives aimed at addressing health disparities and mitigating the progression of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) worldwide, substantial work remains to be undertaken particularly in addressing inequalities in physical activity. Achieving equitable access to health resources and parity in health outcomes remains a critical and unresolved challenge.

The convergence of marine sciences and medical studies has the potential for substantial advances in healthcare. This study uses bibliometric and topic modeling studies to map the progression of research themes from 2000 to 2023, with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary subject of marine and medical sciences. Building on the global publication output at the interface between marine and medical sciences and using the Hierarchical Dirichlet Process, we discovered dominating research topics during three periods, emphasizing shifts in research focus and development trends.

Biocomputation aims to create sophisticated biological systems capable of addressing important problems in (bio)medicine with a machine-like precision. At present, computational gene networks engineered by single- or multi-layered assembly of DNA-, RNA- and protein-level gene switches have allowed bacterial or mammalian cells to perform various regulation logics of interest, including Boolean calculation or neural network-like computing. This review highlights the molecular building blocks, design principles, and computational tasks demonstrated by current biocomputers, before briefly discussing possible fields where biological computers may ultimately outcompete their electronic counterparts and achieve cellular supremacy.
