Serous Cystadenoma of the Pancreas: An Easily Missed Cytological Diagnosis and Clues to Diagnosis.

Diagn Cytopathol

January 2025

Department of Pathology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Serous cystadenoma (SCA) of the pancreas is a benign nonmucinous cystic pancreatic neoplasm and the second most common type of pancreatic cystic neoplasm. Conservative management is advocated in asymptomatic cases as they have indolent clinical behavior and risk for postoperative morbidity, making an exact diagnosis essential. Morphologically, serous cystadenoma has a prominent subepithelial capillary meshwork causing the aspirate to be paucicellular and nondiagnostic.

BACKGROUND Recent studies have shown that peribiliary glands may be the potential cell origin of cholangiocarcinoma, and that precancerous lesions such as biliary intraepithelial neoplasms and intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct may arise from these peribiliary glands. However, whether and how these precancerous lesions progress to cholangiocarcinoma is controversial. CASE REPORT Herein, an autopsy case of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, exclusively periductal-infiltrating, is reported.

NTRK (neurotropic tropomyosin receptor kinase)-rearranged spindle cell tumours represent a rare group of molecularly defined soft tissue neoplasms. These tumours, excluding infantile fibrosarcomas, are characterised by NTRK gene rearrangements and exhibit a range of histomorphologies, including spindle, epithelioid or rhabdoid cells with invasive growth. Their prognosis correlates with histological grade, and surgical resection is the primary treatment.

Tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) has become a new hotspot in cancer research over the past few years. Tumor immune microenvironment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is especially intriguing as HCC is reported to be highly heterogeneous by previous genomic and cytological studies. It is also closely related to patient prognosis and therapeutic outcome.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on improving diagnostic accuracy for pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma (PSP) by analyzing 79 confirmed cases from Zhengzhou University between 2015 and 2023.
  • The analysis revealed a predominance of females, with typical age around 47 years, and noted that 5 cases were initially misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma and 1 as carcinoid.
  • Key diagnostic features include the observation of dual-cell populations within the tumor and specific histological characteristics such as glandular spaces and surface cell types; recognizing these can help prevent misdiagnosis in needle biopsy specimens.
