Both the upper and lower jaws develop from cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) populating the first pharyngeal arch in all gnathostomes. Previous studies showed that the Edn1/Ednra-Dlx5/Dlx6-Hand2 signaling pathway is necessary for lower jaw formation and that ectopic expression of or throughout the CNCCs partly transformed the upper jaw to lower jaw structures, but the molecular mechanisms regulating upper jaw development remain unclear. Here we show that the basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor Twist1 is required for upper jaw development.

Background: Supernumerary teeth, defined as extra teeth beyond the normal series of dentition, can appear anywhere in the dental arch. They may present as solitary or multiple, unilateral or bilateral, and can be either erupted or impacted. Rarely, supernumerary teeth are found in ectopic locations outside the dental arches, such as the nasal cavity, inferior nasal conchae, maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus, or skull.

Unlabelled: Preserving deciduous teeth till their natural exfoliation is important to maintain arch length in different dentition periods. Premature loss of primary teeth may cause discrepancy in arch length due to drifting of teeth and supraeruption of the opposite teeth, thereby hindering the development of a harmonious, functionally and esthetically acceptable dentition. This article describes the fabrication and clinical application of a modified functional distal shoe appliance used due to pathological obliteration of the primary/deciduous mandibular second molar prior to the eruption of the permanent mandibular first molar.

Ectopic eruption of molars occurs more frequently in developing permanent dentition, and requires immediate intervention. Herein, two cases are discussed with ectopic eruption of permanent maxillary first molars which were diagnosed and managed conservatively using a modified Humphrey's appliance, named the NR's appliance. The appliance was fabricated by band adaptation and using wire components of a 21-gauge stainless-steel wire.
