Background: Complex surgery during initial cancer treatment can limit surgical options when planning management of a secondary malignancy. Subtotal esophagectomy and pancreatoduodenectomy are the most invasive and difficult procedures in gastroenterological surgery. Surgical cases in which subtotal esophagectomy was performed after pancreatoduodenectomy with pancreaticogastrostomy are extremely rare and challenging procedures due to the resulting complicated anatomical changes.

Boerhaave's syndrome is a rare critical condition manifesting as transmural esophageal rupture. It is usually associated with forceful emesis and increased intraesophageal pressure. Immediate aggressive surgical intervention is imperative in such cases.

Further development of models is also driven by the requirement of veterinary institutions to reduce the use of animal patients in teaching (live or cadaver). Esophagostomy tube placement is a common therapeutic procedure performed in companion animal critical care cases, and a model was developed to help teach this skill.
