Published: August 2021

In this study, the novel mesoporous carbonized material (HSBE/C) was prepared from clay/carbon composite (SBE/C) treated with hydrofluoric acid (HF) for the first time, and was employed to efficiently adsorb bisphenol A (BPA) in water. Specifically, SBE/C was derived from the pyrolysis of spent bleaching earth (SBE), an industrial waste. HF removed SiO from SBE/C and increased the specific surface area of HSBE/C (from 100.21 to 183.56 m/g), greatly providing more adsorption sites for enhanced BPA adsorption capacity. The Langmuir monolayer maximum adsorption capacity of HSBE/C (103.32 mg/g) was much higher than the commercial activated carbon (AC) (42.53 mg/g). The adsorption process by HSBE/C followed well with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and also was endothermic (ΔH > 0) and spontaneous (ΔG < 0). Based on the systematic characterization and factor experiment (temperature, dosage, initial pH, co-existing ions), BPA adsorption mechanism by HSBE/C likely included the hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and hydrophobic interaction. Moreover, there was no secondary pollution during the total adsorption process. Extraordinary, HSBE/C manifested stability by NaOH desorption regeneration. This study provides a new sight for application of waste-based materials as the promising adsorbents in the treatment of endocrine disruptors.

During the application of most conventional pesticides, a significant proportion is lost through rain wash-off and leaf rolling, leading to reduced actual utilization efficiency. In this paper, aminated dendritic mesoporous organosilicon nanoparticles (DMONs-NH) were synthesized via a one-pot method and used as carriers. Carbendazim (CBZ) was then encapsulated within DMONs-NH through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions.

Particle size and surface properties are crucial for lymphatic drainage (LN), dendritic cell (DC) uptake, DC maturation, and antigen cross-presentation induced by nanovaccine injection, which lead to an effective cell-mediated immune response. However, the manner in which the particle size and surface properties of vaccine carriers such as mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) affect this immune response is unknown. We prepared 50, 100, and 200 nm of MSNs that adsorbed ovalbumin antigen (OVA) while modifying -glucan to enhance immunogenicity.

The limited membrane permeability and bacterial resistance pose significant challenges in the management of intracellular drug-resistant bacterial infections. To overcome this issue, we developed a bacterial-targeted drug delivery system based on quaternary ammonium chitosan-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN-NH-CFP@HACC) for the treatment of intracellular Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. This system utilizes amino-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles to efficiently load cefoperazone (CFP), and the nanoparticles' surface is coated with 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) to target bacteria and enhance macrophage uptake.

Stroke is globally recognized as the second leading cause of death, significantly impairing both motor and cognitive functions. Enhancing regeneration after stroke is crucial for restoring these functions and necessitates strategies to promote neuroregeneration to achieve better post-stroke outcomes. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a key role in neuroregeneration by influencing motor ability, learning, memory, and rehabilitation after stroke.

Owing to the high invasion depth and easy formation of biofilms, the treatment of subcutaneous fungal infection is intractable and challenging. Herein, we report an injectable and biodegradable hydrogel with bactericidal, quorum sensing inhibition and antioxidant activities for the in situ treatment of subcutaneous fungal infection. The hydrogel (BEPE) was constructed by irradiating mixed bovine serum albumin (BSA), ε-polylysine and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-loaded mesoporous polydopamine (PDA) under near-infrared (NIR) light.
