We present a study of the ground state and stability of the fractional plateau phase (FPP) with M/M = 1/8 in the metallic Shastry-Sutherland system TmB. Magnetization (M) measurements show that the FPP states are thermodynamically stable when the sample is cooled in constant magnetic field from the paramagnetic phase to the ordered one at 2 K. On the other hand, after zero-field cooling and subsequent magnetization these states appear to be of dynamic origin. In this case the FPP states are closely associated with the half plateau phase (HPP, M/M = ½), mediate the HPP to the low-field antiferromagnetic (AF) phase and depend on the thermodynamic history. Thus, in the same place of the phase diagram both, the stable and the metastable (dynamic) fractional plateau (FP) states, can be observed, depending on the way they are reached. In case of metastable FP states thermodynamic paths are identified that lead to very flat fractional plateaus in the FPP. Moreover, with a further decrease of magnetic field also the low-field AF phase becomes influenced and exhibits a plateau of the order of 1/1000 M.

Continuum Excitations in a Spin Supersolid on a Triangular Lattice.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2024

Laboratory for Solid State Physics, ETH Zürich, 8093 Zürich, Switzerland.

Magnetic, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering are used to study spin correlations in the easy-axis XXZ triangular lattice magnet K_{2}Co(SeO_{3})_{2}. Despite the presence of quasi-2D "supersolid" magnetic order, the low-energy excitation spectrum contains no sharp modes and is instead a broad and structured multiparticle continuum. Applying a weak magnetic field drives the system into an m=1/3 fractional magnetization plateau phase and restores sharp spin wave modes.

Understanding the dynamics of the African swine fever virus during periods of intense replication is critical for effective combatting of the rapid spread. In our research, we have developed a fractional-order SVEIR model using the Caputo derivatives to investigate this behaviour. We have established the existence and uniqueness of the solution through fixed point theory and determined the basic reproduction number using the next-generation matrix method.

Scaling Laws in Polysaccharide Rheology: Comparative Analysis of Water and Ionic Liquid Systems.

Biomacromolecules

October 2024

Department of Chemical Engineering, Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen, University of Groningen, Nijenborgh 3, 9747 AG Groningen, The Netherlands.

This study investigates the rheological behavior of two plant-based polysaccharides, with different degrees of hydrophilicity, agar (highly hydrophilic) and guar gum (hydrophilic), in water and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMImAc). The rheological response of these polymers is highly dependent on the solvent's ability to disrupt intermolecular associations. In water, agar forms hydrogels, while guar gum behaves as a viscoelastic liquid with slow modes.

Understanding topological matter in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect requires identifying the nature of edge state quasiparticles. FQH edge state at the filling factor ν=2/3 in the spin-polarized and unpolarized phases is represented by the two modes of composite fermions (CF) with the parallel or opposite spins described by the chiral Luttinger liquids. Tunneling through a quantum point contact (QPC) between different or similar spin phases is solved exactly.

A new method to quantify the impacts of human activity on soil conservation service.

J Environ Manage

September 2024

State Key Laboratory of Urban and Regional Ecology, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100085, China.

Human activities and climate change impact ecosystem services, thereby affecting economic and social sustainable development. Measuring the heterogeneity in space and time of how human activities affect ecosystem services poses a challenge for the sustainable management of land resources. Based on "human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) - Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) - Soil Conservation Service (SCS)" cascading effect, first, a geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) model was employed to assess the impact of HANPP in percent of potential NPP (hereafter HANPP%) on the FVC; second, changes in the FVC caused by human activities were quantified; and third, the potential soil conservation service (SCS) and actual soil conservation service (SCS) were estimated using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model, and the difference between them represented the changes in soil conservation service caused by human activities (SCS).
