AI Article Synopsis

  • The study focuses on identifying specific chromosome regions that link anther indehiscence (a key trait for hybrid rice) with stigma exertion.
  • A mapping population of 189 plants was created from a cross between CRI-48 and Jasmine 85 to explore this genetic relationship.
  • Results revealed a single genetic locus on chromosome 6 responsible for these traits, contradicting earlier beliefs of multiple genes being involved, with important SNP markers identified for further research.

Article Abstract

Anther indehiscence in certain wide crosses combines male sterility with stigma exertion, a phenomenon that is desirable for hybrid rice seed production. This study sought to identify chromosomal region(s) that combine anther indehiscence with exerted stigmas. A mapping population consisting of 189 BCF plants was derived from a cross between CRI-48 and Jasmine 85 and backcrossing the resulting F to Jasmine 85. Contrary to the three complementary genes mode of inheritance reported earlier, a single locus () was mapped on chromosome 6 at 27.4 cM for anther indehiscence with exerted stigmas through a mixed model-based composite interval mapping (MCIM). This locus was flanked by two single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, K_ID6002884 and K_ID6003341 within a range of 23.1-28.9 cM. The allele at the locus was contributed by the CRI-48 parent which has ancestry. This locus is suggested to control anther indehiscence and stigma exertion through pleiotropic gene action or cluster of genes.

The DC1 domain protein Vacuoleless Gametophytes regulates stamen development in Arabidopsis.

Vacuoleless Gametophytes (VLG) is a DC1 domain protein that was initially characterized as essential for early female and male gametophytes development in Arabidopsis. However, VLG expression was also detected in stamens, pistils and other sporophytic tissues, implying a broader role for this protein. As homozygous insertional VLG lines resulted unviable, we generated Arabidopsis amiRNA VLG knock-down plants to study the role of VLG in sporophyte development.

Male sterility is an important agronomical trait in self-pollinating plants for producing cost-effective F1 hybrids to harness the heterosis. Still, large-scale development and maintenance of male sterile lines and restoring fertility in F1 hybrids pose significant challenges in plant hybrid breeding. Cotton is a self-pollinating crop and exhibits strong hybrid vigor.

High-temperature (HT) stress can induce male sterility in wheat; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study examined proteomic alterations across three developmental stages between normal and HT-induced male-sterile (HT-ms) anthers in wheat. Utilizing tandem mass tags-based proteomics, we identified 2532 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs): 27 in the tetrad stage, 157 in the binuclear stage, and 2348 in the trinuclear stage.

Tapetum, the innermost layer of the anther wall, provides essential nutrients and materials for pollen development. Timely degradation of anther tapetal cells is a prerequisite for normal pollen development in flowering plants. Tapetal cells facilitate male gametogenesis by providing cellular contents after highly coordinated programmed cell death (PCD).

Flavonoids have been shown to play an essential role in plant growth and fertility. 4-Coumarate CoA ligase (4CL) is one of the indispensable enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids. However, the role of 4CL and flavonoids in impact on cotton fertility is still unknown.
