YES, TO SOME DEGREE-BUT IT IS OF UNCERTAIN CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE. OVER A PERIOD OF 6 MONTHS, METFORMIN MODESTLY REDUCED WEIGHT (-2.1 KG) AND BODY FAT MASS (-1.9%), BUT NOT BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) OR LEAN BODY MASS, IN ADOLESCENTS WHO WERE OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE. THIS IS COMPARABLE TO LIFESTYLE INTERVENTIONS (DIET AND EXERCISE) SUPPORTED WITH > 26 HOURS OF COUNSELING, WHICH MODESTLY IMPROVED BMI BUT NOT WEIGHT. (STRENGTH OF RECOMMENDATION [SOR]: A, BASED ON A LARGE META-ANALYSIS OF RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALS [RCTS] OF VARIABLE QUALITY).

Purpose: Black adolescents in the United States face disproportionate poor nutrition and obesity risk due to racism. Intersections of larger structural contexts that pose differential access to Black adolescents' health resources, such as state-level racism and neighborhood-level disadvantage, may govern these risks. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the associations between state-level racism, neighborhood disadvantage, and their intersection with nutrition and obesity for Black adolescents in a longitudinal study.

HSP90 Family Members, Their Regulators and Ischemic Stroke Risk: A Comprehensive Molecular-Genetics and Bioinformatics Analysis.

Front Biosci (Schol Ed)

December 2024

Laboratory of Genomic Research, Research Institute for Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology, Kursk State Medical University, 305041 Kursk, Russia.

Background: Disruptions in proteostasis are recognized as key drivers in cerebro- and cardiovascular disease progression. Heat shock proteins (HSPs), essential for maintaining protein stability and cellular homeostasis, are pivotal in neuroperotection. Consequently, deepening the understanding the role of HSPs in ischemic stroke (IS) risk is crucial for identifying novel therapeutic targets and advancing neuroprotective strategies.

The Putative Antilipogenic Role of NRG4 and ERBB4: First Expression Study on Human Liver Samples.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

December 2024

Center for Immunology and Cellular Biotechnology, Institute of Medicine and Life Sciences, Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, 236001 Kaliningrad, Russia.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor 4 (ERBB4) and neuregulin 4 (NRG4) have been shown to reduce steatosis and prevent the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in mouse models, but little to nothing is known about their role in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in humans. This study is the first to investigate the expression of and mRNAs and their role in lipid metabolism in the livers of individuals with obesity, type 2 diabetes and biopsy-proven NAFLD.

Methods: Liver biospecimens were obtained intraoperatively from 80 individuals.

Background: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Toolbox Cognition Battery is increasingly being used as a standardized test to examine cognitive functioning in multicentric studies. This study examines the associations between the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery composite scores with neuroimaging metrics using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study to elucidate the neurobiological and neuroanatomical correlates of these cognitive scores.

Methods: Neuroimaging data from 5290 children (mean age 9.

Background: Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is considered one of the biological treatments for knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Patient selection remains a key factor to ensure that optimal treatment benefit and body mass index (BMI) are one of the key factors to be considered. This study aims to evaluate the influence of obesity on the duration of treatment benefit of BMAC for KOA.
