Reductive cyanation of tertiary alkyl bromides using electrophilic cyanating reagent and zinc reductant was developed, providing various α-cyano ketones, esters, and carboxamides containing a nitrile-bearing all-carbon quaternary center in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. The corresponding reaction mechanism involving in situ generated organozinc reagent and reactivity distinction was elucidated by density functional theory computation.

Herein, we disclose the nickel-catalyzed reductive cyanation of alkenyl tosylates and triflates. Both cyclic and acyclic alkenyl nitriles are produced in moderate to good yield using 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methylmalononitrile (MeO-MPMN), a novel transnitrilation, or nitrile transfer, reagent. A robustness screen was undertaken to demonstrate the functional group tolerance of this method.

Nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) are undesirable in the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox)-driven nitrogen removal technologies in the modern wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Diverse strategies have been developed to suppress NOB based on their physiological properties that we have understood. But our knowledge of the diversity and mechanisms employed by NOB for survival in the modern WWTPs remains limited.

Manganese complexes [(arene)Mn(CO)] were prepared in one step from arenes and Mn(CO)Br. They were found to be efficient catalysts in the carbonyl cyanation with TMSCN, CO fixation by epoxides, and direct reductive amination in the presence of syngas. The amination reaction tolerated various reducible functional groups.

ConspectusAromatic esters are cost-effective, versatile, and commonly used scaffolds that are readily synthesized or encountered as synthetic intermediates. While most conventional reactions involving these esters are nucleophilic acyl substitutions or 1,2-nucleophilic additions─where a nucleophile attacks the carbonyl group, decarbonylative transformations offer an alternative pathway by using the carbonyl group as a leaving group. This transition-metal-catalyzed process typically begins with oxidative addition of the C(acyl)-O bond to the metal.
