Current advancements in environmental RNA (eRNA) exploit its relatively fast turnover rate relative to environmental DNA (eDNA) to assess 'metabolically active' or temporally/spatially recent community diversity. However, this focus significantly underutilizes the trove of potential ecological information encrypted in eRNA. Here, we argue for pushing beyond current species-level eDNA detection capabilities by using eRNA to detect any organisms with unique eRNA profiles, potentially including different life-history stages, sexes, or even specific phenotypes within a species. We also discuss the future of eRNA as a means of assessing the physiological status of organisms and the ecological health of populations and communities, reflecting ecosystem-level conditions. We posit that eRNA has the potential to significantly improve the resolution of organism detection, biological monitoring, and biomonitoring applications in ecology.

Alternative pre-mRNA splicing (AS) is a crucial regulatory layer of gene expression in eukaryotes. AS patterns can change in response to abiotic and biotic stress, allowing cellular functions to adapt to environmental conditions. Here, we examined the effects of cellular stress-inducing chemicals on AS-mediated gene regulation in Arabidopsis thaliana by investigating the alternatively spliced forms of SERINE-ARGININE PROTEIN30 (SRp30) and U1-70 K, encoding splicing factors, as well as ASCORBATE PEROXIDASE3 (APX3) and FOLYLPOLYGLUTAMATE SYNTHASE3 (FPGS3), encoding enzymes important for stress responses.

The widely distributed heat shock protein DnaJ is renowned for its pivotal role in enhancing thermal tolerance in plants; however, its involvement in drought tolerance remains elusive. In this study, genes encoding DnaJ1 were cloned from drought-resistant wild tomato (Solanum pennellii) and drought-sensitive cultivated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). SpDnaJ1 and SlDnaJ1 from both tomato species were localized in the chloroplast, and their gene expression was induced by various abiotic stresses.

Background: No consensus has yet been reached concerning whether there were significant differences in the vaginal microbiota according to maternal gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) status. This study aimed to compare the vaginal microbiota of women with GDM and normal blood glucose before and after delivery and to prospectively evaluate the influence of GDM on the dynamic changes of vaginal microbiota from antepartum to postpartum.
Methods: This study included 20 GDM patients and 31 average pregnant women who gave birth at the Shenzhen Baoan Women's and Children's Hospital.

Mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) is a metabolite of the diester parent compound Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a widespread environmental toxicant known for its harmful effects on Sertoli cells and the subsequent loss of germ cells through apoptosis in postnatal animals. Peritubular myoid cells (PTMCs) produce various signaling factors, including the chemokine monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1); however, the MEHP exposure-induced BTB disruption followed by MCP-1 secretion by PTMCs, the recruitment, and activation of macrophages as well as molecular mechanisms that initiate the secretion in the testis has yet to be closely examined. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that PTMCs generate MCP-1 via the interleukin-1 signaling pathway upon MEHP exposure.
