A review on aquatic ecosystem mesocosms.

Published: March 2021

Aquatic ecosystem mesocosm refers to an artificially constructed near-natural simulation facility in aquatic ecosystem. With aquatic ecosystem mesocosms, experiments on the responses of biological communities can be conducted by controlling physical, chemical and other habitat conditions. Mesocosm experiments can bridge the gap between laboratory experiments and field experiments. Laboratory experiment can only simulate a small number of simple factors, whereas field experimental systems are complex and difficult to conduct controlled experiments. By resear-ching into global long-term mesocosms, we classified them into four types, . flowing type mesocosm, enclosure, land-based simulation pool and mobile experimental tank. The meoscosms gene-rally include physical-biological simulation system, automatic control system, monitoring and analysis system, and central control system. In recent years, aquatic ecosystem research in China has gradually changed from a single environmental factor to the whole ecosystem. We suggest that the construction of the mesocosms in China's aquatic ecosystem should increase the structural complexity and be combined with field monitoring to support large scale simulation.

Occurrence of microplastics and distinct plastisphere in aquatic environments of metal mining areas in South China.

J Hazard Mater

March 2025

College of Environment and Energy, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510006, China; The Key Lab of Pollution Control and Ecosystem Restoration in Industry Clusters, Ministry of Education, Guangzhou 510006, China. Electronic address:

Microplastic pollution is a growing global environmental concern, significantly impacting aquatic ecosystems. In metal mining regions, acid mine drainage (AMD) can exacerbate the issue as microplastics may carry heavy metals, heightening the risks to both human health and ecosystems. AMD can also form a distinct plastisphere further influencing the behavior and distribution of heavy metals.

This study investigates the performance of various types of carbon membranes in reverse osmosis systems aimed at reducing salinity, nitrates, phosphates, and ammonia in aquaculture wastewater. As sustainable aquaculture practices become increasingly essential, effective treatment solutions are needed to mitigate pollution from nutrient-rich effluents. The research highlights several carbon membranes types, including carbon molecular sieves, activated carbon membranes, carbon nanotube membranes, and graphene oxide membranes, all of which demonstrate exceptional filtration capabilities due to their unique structural properties.

Background: This study focuses on the detection and co-occurrence of Acanthamoeba and Klebsiella pneumoniae in freshwater river systems. Both microorganisms are known for their pathogenic potential, with Acanthamoeba capable of causing infections such as amoebic keratitis, and K. pneumoniae being a common cause of community infections.

Exposure to hazardous microorganisms during waste handling is a potential health concern. Molecular biological techniques provide means of profiling the microbial community at high taxonomic resolution, allow the identification of critical human pathogens on the species level and thereby aid the risk assessment of work tasks. The present study used high-throughput sequencing to characterise the microbiome in personal full-shift air samples collected at contemporary waste sorting plants (WSPs) and identified large variations in community composition within (alpha diversity) and between (beta diversity) WSPs.

Chromosome-level genome assembly of a critically endangered species Leuciscus chuanchicus.

Sci Data

March 2025

Key Laboratory of Aquatic Genomics, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, CAFS Key Laboratory of Aquatic Genomics, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Beijing, China.

Leuciscus chuanchicus, a critically endangered cyprinid endemic in the Yellow River, represents an evolutionary significant lineage within Leuciscinae. However, conservation efforts for this species have been hindered by the lack of genetic and genomic resources. Here we reported a high-quality chromosome-level genome of L.
