Case: We describe a case of cryptococcal osteomyelitis in a 70-year-old man who presented with left elbow and shoulder pain. Subsequent imaging indicated osteomyelitis of the entire humerus, and he underwent debridement of the elbow and shoulder. Pathological findings revealed Cryptococcus neoformans infection. Surgical management was followed by a prolonged course of antibiotics.

Conclusion: Although C. neoformans is rare as the etiology of infection of the entire humerus, orthopaedic surgeons should consider cryptococcosis as a potential cause of infection.

Objectives: To evaluate the value of (dynamic) contrast-enhanced MRI for the diagnosis and follow-up of central cartilage tumors (CCT) of the proximal humerus, distal femur and proximal tibia.

Materials & Methods: 97 patients (44 ± 11 years, 31men) with a CCT (histopathologically proven and/or > 2 years follow-up (5 ± 3 years)) were retrospectively/consecutively included at the Ghent University Hospital (Belgium, 2003-2021). Thickness of the enhancing rim and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI parameters of the entire tumor were calculated.

Does internal fixation of shaft fracture show specificities in over-80 year-olds?

Orthop Traumatol Surg Res

November 2024

Hôtel Dieu, service d'orthopédie-traumatologie, 1, place Alexis-Ricordeau, 44093 Nantes Cedex 1, France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoporotic fractures are becoming more common in elderly people, particularly in diaphyseal locations on native bones, which are less frequent overall.
  • Internal fixation methods must adapt due to changes in bone structure, requiring larger implants and specific types of screws to ensure stability and prevent further fractures.
  • Nailing is primarily used for femoral and tibial fractures, and in cases involving the tibia or humerus, techniques that are gentle on soft tissue are essential to avoid complications in fragile skin.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how scapulothoracic orientation affects simulated range of motion (ROM) in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA), expecting notable differences between adjusted and unadjusted values.
  • Using CT scans from ten shoulder patients, six surgeons independently planned rTSA with software that adjusted for scapular orientation, comparing various movement planes.
  • Results showed significant differences in all movement planes with adjustments leading to lower ROM values, particularly in external rotation, extension, and internal rotation, indicating the importance of posture in preoperative planning for rTSA.

Imminent risk of the first and second recurrent osteoporotic fractures in South Korea.

College of Pharmacy, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Republic of Korea; Department of Regulatory Science, Graduate School, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Republic of Korea; Institute of Regulatory Innovation through Science, Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: A history of fractures increases the likelihood of experiencing subsequent and secondary fractures. To prevent further fractures, global guidelines recommend aggressive proactive treatment with medication for patients at an imminent risk of osteoporotic fracture (OF), which is defined as a high likelihood of experiencing subsequent fractures in the near future. However, there is a lack of research focusing on patients with imminent risk of OFs in South Korea.
