Purpose: To investigate whether the correction amount by balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) is associated with the incidence of adjacent vertebral fractures (AVF).

Methods: Data from 61 patients without and 25 patients with AVF were analyzed. A linear regression model was used between vertebral instability and corrected angle or height to divide patients into the overcorrection and undercorrection groups.

Results: Vertebral fractures overcorrected for instability led to a higher incidence rate of AVF [42.4% and 46.9% with overcorrection vs. 10.7% and 13.3% with undercorrection for angle and height, respectively].

Conclusions: Overcorrection of fractured vertebrae may associate with the increased incidence of AVF.

Article Synopsis
  • Knee pain often involves varus deformity and unicompartmental osteoarthritis, where high tibial valgus osteotomy (HTO) has emerged as an effective treatment option to delay joint replacement.
  • A case report highlighted two patients with bilateral knee arthritis who underwent medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy using Dr. Saigal's plate, both achieving good range of motion and minimal complications post-surgery.
  • Comprehensive evaluations, including radiological assessments and specific surgical techniques like the Miniaci Method, were employed to ensure successful outcomes, with both patients showing significant improvement after one year.

Volumetric Analysis of Orbital Volume Discrepancy as a Marker of Change in Globe Position After Three-Point Fixation of Zygomatic Complex Fractures.

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

December 2024

Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, College of Dentistry, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia; Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry for Girls, AL-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. Electronic address:

Background: Many researchers have proposed incorporating orbital volume (OV) discrepancies between the affected and unaffected orbits into routine diagnostic processes as an indicator for early surgical repair of zygomatic complex fractures (ZMCFxs) to avoid postoperative ocular complications.

Purpose: The study aimed to determine the correlation between the preoperative OV discrepancy and postoperative globe position.

Study Design, Setting, Sample: A retrospective cohort study was performed on patients with unilateral ZMCFxs associated with orbital floor fractures, treated at Al-Zahraa Hospital, Al-Azhar University, from January 2020 to July 2023.

Proximal junctional kyphosis above long spinal fusions.

Orthop Traumatol Surg Res

November 2024

Service de chirurgie orthopédique, Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou, APHP, Université Paris Cité, 20 rue Leblanc, Paris, France. Electronic address:

Introduction: Spinal deformity in adults is a major public health problem. After failure of conservative treatment, correction and fusion surgery leads to clinical and radiological improvement. However, mechanical complications and more particularly - proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) - are common with an incidence of 10%-40% depending on the studies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the rates and risk factors for proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK), proximal junctional failure (PJF), and rod fractures in patients over 60 who underwent long-segment spinal fusion surgery with anterior column realignment (ACR).
  • Among the 106 patients studied, PJK occurred in 15.1%, PJF in 28.3%, and rod fractures in 17.9%, with specific surgical and radiographic factors influencing the risks.
  • Notably, the number of levels fused with ACR did not significantly impact the risk of these complications, suggesting that surgeons should pay close attention to screw orientation and postoperative alignment adjustments.

Article Synopsis
  • Rotational malformation is a common complication after intramedullary nailing of intertrochanteric fractures, and it can be hard to detect since imaging only assesses certain planes, not the rotational alignment.
  • This study examined 74 patients using postoperative CT scans to evaluate hip anteversion and identify correlations with patient or fracture characteristics.
  • Results showed that 31.1% of patients had significant rotational deformity, with unstable fractures being linked to worse rotational alignment outcomes.
