Atomically thin 2D materials present the potential for advancing membrane separations via a combination of high selectivity (from molecular sieving) and high permeance (due to atomic thinness). However, the creation of a high density of precise nanopores (narrow-size-distribution) over large areas in 2D materials remains challenging, and nonselective leakage from nanopore heterogeneity adversely impacts performance. Here, we demonstrate protein-enabled size-selective defect sealing (PDS) for atomically thin graphene membranes over centimeter scale areas by leveraging the size and reactivity of permeating proteins to preferentially seal larger nanopores (≥4 nm) while preserving a significant amount of smaller nanopores (via steric hindrance).

Objective: Patients who exhibit severe loss of tooth structure are challenging to rehabilitate. Conventional treatment of these patients may require adjunctive procedures of surgical crown lengthening, elective endodontic therapy and placement of posts and cores to retain full coverage crowns as part of a full mouth rehabilitation. Minimally invasive approaches to treatment of these patients provides opportunity to conserve tooth structure and to reduce adjunctive procedures by using an advanced adhesive approach to retain all ceramic partial coverage restorations as part of a full mouth rehabilitation.

To endow an implant surface with enhanced properties to ensure an appropriate seal with the host tissue for inflammation/infection resistance, next-generation bone implant collagen-polyphenol nanolayers were built on conventional titanium surfaces through a multilayer approach. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was performed to investigate the chemical arrangement of molecules within the surface layer and to provide an estimate of their thickness. A short-term (2 and 4 weeks) in vivo test of bone implants in a healthy rabbit model was performed to check possible side effects of the soft surface layer on early phases of osteointegration, leading to secondary stability.
