The renaissance of interest in metabolism has focused mostly on techniques to measure massive numbers of metabolites. Yet, established metabolic theory has been abandoned. Here, I highlight one misconception: how ATP (and ADP and AMP) are currently understood. A critical point was established early on: cellular [ATP] is constant.

Hematophagous organisms undergo remarkable metabolic changes during the blood digestion process, increasing fermentative glucose metabolism, and reducing respiratory rates, both consequence of functional mitochondrial remodeling. Here, we review the pathways involved in energy metabolism and mitochondrial functionality in a comparative framework across different hematophagous species, and consider how these processes regulate redox homeostasis during blood digestion. The trend across distinct species indicate that a switch in energy metabolism might represent an important defensive mechanism to avoid the potential harmful interaction of oxidants generated from aerobic energy metabolism with products derived from blood digestion.

A novel concept of "gasotransmitter" arrived recently. They are small molecules of endogenous gases. Hydrogene sulfide (H2S) is qualified as the third gasotransmitter beside nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO).

Venous-systemic oxygen persufflation (VSOP) was performed in rat livers stored at 4 degrees C in either UW or HTK preservation solution. Since tissue anoxia is associated with a transformation of cellular NAD+ to NADH and the latter fluoresces upon UV-epiillumination, homogeneity and intensity of liver oxygenation could be analysed by intravital microscopic detection of NADH fluorescence. VSOP resulted in a significant decrease of the NADH signal, documenting effective tissue oxygenation in both UW and HTK.

Background: Since a potential exists for untoward effects on the cornea from the high magnetic fields and radio-frequency energies, and the further manipulation required for phosphorus-31 magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS), we determined the effects of this technology on tissues using paired human corneas (n = 4) meeting criteria acceptable for transplantation.
Methods: Slit-lamp biomicroscopy, pachometry, specular microscopy, and redux fluorophotometry were performed on all corneas. One cornea of each pair was examined (< 30 min) by 31P-MRS.
