Introduction: Necrotising soft tissue infection (NSTI) is an exceptionally dangerous infectious disease targeting soft tissues with high mortality as well as morbidity. The aim of reconstructive surgery after initial debridement is to maintain function as well as to achieve a satisfactory cosmetic result.

Presentation Of Case: A 50-year-old male presented with necrotising soft tissue infection on the thorax and left upper arm following mastectomy for breast cancer.

A Symmetrical Leech-Inspired Soft Crawling Robot Based on Gesture Control.

Biomimetics (Basel)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Mechanism Theory and Equipment Design, Ministry of Education, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China.

This paper presents a novel soft crawling robot controlled by gesture recognition, aimed at enhancing the operability and adaptability of soft robots through natural human-computer interactions. The Leap Motion sensor is employed to capture hand gesture data, and Unreal Engine is used for gesture recognition. Using the UE4Duino, gesture semantics are transmitted to an Arduino control system, enabling direct control over the robot's movements.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder that often necessitates extensive surgery when medical treatment fails, particularly in advanced stages. Traditional surgical approaches, including flaps and skin grafts, are effective for tissue coverage but can lead to vascular complications and recurrence of HS. This study introduces a novel technique, the apple-peeling procedure, combined with negative pressure wound therapy at -50 mm Hg for 5 days postoperatively.

A novel approach for managing the incisions of tibial plateau fractures with soft tissue swelling.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedics, The Second Hospital, Cheeloo College of Medicine, Shandong University, 247 Beiyuan Street, Jinan, 250033, Shandong, People's Republic of China.

To investigate the feasibility and clinical efficacy of a novel approach to managing the incisions used to treat tibial plateau fractures (TPFs) with soft tissue swelling. We retrospectively enrolled 64 patients with TPFs who underwent surgery at the Second Hospital of Shandong University. Patients were divided into two groups: Group A (n = 32) underwent early surgery with the novel incision management technique, and Group B (n = 32) underwent conventional surgery after swelling reduction.

Fibrotic and Emphysematous Murine Lung Mechanics Under Negative-Pressure Ventilation.

Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol

January 2025

Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of California, Riverside CA, USA.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide and the progressive nature heightens the calamity of the disease. Despite countless existing COPD studies, lung mechanics are often reported under positive-pressure ventilation (PPV) and implications and extrapolations made from these studies pose serious restrictions as recent works have divulged disparate elastic and energetic results between PPV and more physiological negative-pressure counterparts (NPV). This non-equivalence of PPV and NPV needs to be investigated under diseased states to augment our understanding of disease mechanics.
