Abortions in domestic ruminants cause significant economic losses to farmers. Determining the cause of an abortion is important for control efforts, but it can be challenging. All available diagnostic methods in the bacteriology laboratory should be employed in every case due to the many limiting factors (autolysis, lack of history, range of samples) that complicate the investigation process.

This study investigated outbreaks of seemingly related abortions and orchitis which occurred in the Khomas, Omaheke and Otjozondjupa regions of Namibia from 2016 to 2018, affecting cattle, sheep and goats. Fifty-nine questionnaires were administered, and 48 were completed giving an 81.4% return.

The male bovine microbiota is a relatively unexplored area even though it has been shown to impact the fertility of not only the male but also the female. With this study, our aim was to evaluate the bacterial composition of semen from bulls with either satisfactory or unsatisfactory semen quality as represented by poor sperm motility and/or morphology. We hypothesized based on findings in human and other domestic animal studies, that the microbiota diversity and composition may be associated with decreased sperm quality.
