Looking at the urine for diagnostic purposes, once performed by ancient Egyptians, can still provide some valuable clues in modern medicine. Several diseases have been named after their associated urine color and this underlines the clinical value of visual urine inspection: blue diaper disease, purple urine bag syndrome, black urine disease or porphyria. Abnormal urine color could be challenging for the clinician: it may reveal neoplastic disease (urologic cancer; melanoma), cell lysis (rhabdomyolysis; hemolysis), infection (lymphatic filariasis; malaria), enzyme deficiency (porphyria; alkaptonuria), medication or food intake. In this article, we present the diagnostic approach, the mechanisms involved and the main causes of abnormal urine color.

Resazurin dye is an in vivo sensor of kidney tubular function.

Kidney Int

December 2024

Division of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology, College of Pharmacy & Comprehensive Cancer Center, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the main functional index of kidney health and disease. Currently, no methods are available to directly measure tubular mass and function. Here, we report a serendipitous finding that the in vitro cell viability dye resazurin can be used in mice as an exogenous sensor of tubular function.

Portable Amperometric Biosensor Enhanced with Enzyme-Ternary Nanocomposites for Prostate Cancer Biomarker Detection.

Biosensors (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Cogno-Mechatronics Engineering, College of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Pusan National University, Busan 46241, Republic of Korea.

Enzyme-based portable amperometric biosensors are precise and low-cost medical devices used for rapid cancer biomarker screening. Sarcosine (Sar) is an ideal biomarker for prostate cancer (PCa). Because human serum and urine contain complex interfering substances that can directly oxidize at the electrode surface, rapid Sar screening biosensors are relatively challenging and have rarely been reported.

NMPA Key Laboratory for Research and Evaluation of Drug Metabolism & Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of New Drug Screening & Guangdong-Hongkong-Macao Joint Laboratory for New Drug Screening, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510515, China.

A simple, rapid, and visual approach is developed to perform diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by employing smart bifunctional DNA (bfDNA) sensors, exonuclease III, concatermers of CuO nanoparticles (CuONPs), and gold NPs (AuNPs) aggregation [AuNPs agglutination (AA)], namely, the bfDEC-AA method. The bfDNA sensors serve as probes for identifying 16S rRNA genes of bacterium or 18S rRNA of fungus and as mediators connecting the concatermers of CuONPs. The AA as a signal source is triggered by Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition click chemistry.

The optical detection of arsenic (As) in human biological fluids and environmental water samples is presented using alpha-cyclodextrin-modified silver nanoparticles (α/CyD-AgNPs) at the trace level. This method is based on the measurement of a red shift of the LSPR band of α/CyD-AgNPs in the region of 200-800 nm. The color of α/CyD-AgNPs was changed from yellow to colorless by the addition of As(iii).

Rationale: Automated serum index is widely used in biochemical testing, enabling the observation of sample characteristics to a certain extent. The differences between serum lipemia index and sample characteristics can, to a certain extent, facilitate early detection of certain diseases.

Patient Concerns: This is a case report of an elderly patient who was admitted to cardiology outpatient clinic due to dizziness.
