A systematic review of low-cost simulators in ENT surgery.

J Laryngol Otol

Department of Plastic Surgery, Charing Cross Hospital, London, UK.

Published: June 2021

Background: Simulation training has become a key part of the surgical curriculum over recent years. Current trainees face significantly reduced operating time as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, alongside increased costs to surgical training, thus creating a need for low-cost simulation models.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed using multiple databases. Each model included was assessed for the ease and expense of its construction, as well as its validity and educational value.

Results: A total of 18 low-cost simulation models were identified, relating to otology, head and neck surgery, laryngeal surgery, rhinology, and tonsil surgery. In only four of these models (22.2 per cent) was an attempt made to demonstrate the educational impact of the model. Validation was rarely formally assessed.

Conclusion: More efforts are required to standardise validation methods and demonstrate the educational value of the available low-cost simulation models in otorhinolaryngology.

A localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor based on tapered optical fiber (TOF) using hollow gold nanoparticles (HAuNPs) for measuring the refractive index (RI) is presented. This optical fiber sensor is a good candidate for a label-free RI biosensor. In practical biosensors, bioreceptors are immobilized on nanoparticles (NPs) that only absorb specific biomolecules.

The primary goal of the current work was to construct pH-sensitive nano and microcomposite hydrogel beads based on alginate (AL), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), biochar (BC), and two Moroccan clays: Ghassoul (swelling SW) and red (not swelling NSW) nano and microhybrid. The adsorbents, SW + AL, SW + AL + BC, SW + AL + CMC, NSW + AL, NSW + AL + BC, NSW + AL + CMC, AL, and AL + CMC were prepared for the adsorption of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ). The test samples were characterized using a variety of techniques, including X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), IR spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), with the molecular structures of the studied additives geometrically optimized using the DFT/B3LYP method and the function 6-311G(d).

Feedback plays a crucial role in the growth and development of trainees, particularly when addressing areas needing improvement. However, faculty members often struggle to deliver constructive feedback, particularly when discussing underperformance. A key obstacle is the lack of comfort many faculty experience in providing feedback that fosters growth.

Objective: Buccal myomucosal flap procedures have become a critical tool in the armamentarium of the cleft surgeon. Mastering this technique is complex and providing sufficient training opportunities presents significant challenges. Our study details the design, development, and evaluation of a low-cost, high-fidelity buccal myomucosal flap surgical simulator.

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have attracted significant attention owing to their simple manufacturing process and unique optoelectronic properties. Their reversible electrical or optical property changes in response to oxidizing or reducing environments make them prospective materials for gas detection technologies. Despite advancements in perovskite-based sensor research, the mechanisms behind perovskite-gas interactions, vital for sensor performance, are still inconclusive.
