Pediatric patients with moyamoya disease frequently show rapid progression with a high risk of stroke. Indirect revascularization is widely accepted as a surgical treatment for pediatric moyamoya disease, but it does not augment cerebral blood flow immediately, which leaves patients at risk for stroke peri-operatively. This delay in flow augmentation may make adding direct bypass the better option.

Inhibition of Neutral Sphingomyelinase-2 restrains Enterovirus 71 Infection by Autophagy.

Microb Pathog

January 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine, Suzhou Mental Health Center, the Affiliated Guangji Hospital of Soochow University, Suzhou215137, Jiangsu, China.

Enterovirus 71 (EV-71) is a major pathogenic factor that causes hand, foot, and mouth disease in young children and infants. Given the limited treatments for EV-71 infection, discovering new host factors and understanding the mechanisms involved will aid in combating this viral infection. Neutral sphingomyelinase-2 (nSMase-2, encoded by SMPD3) is a crucial cellular cofactor in viral infection.

Sensitive Months for Green Spaces' Impact on Macrosomia and Interaction with Air Pollutants: A Birth Cohort Study.

Environ Pollut

January 2025

School of Public Health, Ningxia Medical University, Yinchuan, Ningxia, 750004, China; The Peking University First Hospital Ningxia Women and Children's Hospital, Yinchuan, Ningxia, 751000, China. Electronic address:

Macrosomia poses significant health risks to mother and fetuses, yet the protective sensitive window for the effects of green space resources on the risk of macrosomia remains unexplored. This study identified sensitive windows of green space exposure and examined the interactions with air pollutants. In a study of 221,380 full-term newborns delivered at the Hospital, from 2017 to 2021, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and atmospheric pollutant concentrations were matched to participants based on their residences in the Ningxia region.

Lung function-associated exposome profile in the era of climate change: Pooled analysis of 8 population-based European cohorts within the EXPANSE project.

Environ Int

January 2025

Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Allschwil, Switzerland; Department of Public Health, University of Basel, Basel, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Background: The independent and interrelated long-term effects of the exposome such as air pollution, greenness, and ambient temperature on lung function are not well understood, yet relevant in the light of climate change.

Methods: Pre-bronchodilation FEV1 from five mature birth cohorts (N = 4724) and three adult cohorts (N = 6052) from five European countries were used to assess cross-sectional associations with air pollution, greenness, and ambient temperature, assigned to their residential address. All two-way interactions and square terms were a priori included in building the final elastic net regression model.

Sprengel's Deformity (SD) is a rare condition of the shoulder girdle, appearing as the principal congenital anomaly of the shoulder in paediatric patients. The aim of this study is to document the combined experience of two paediatric orthopaedic departments in managing SD using the modified Green Procedure, with a specific emphasis on the clinical and functional outcomes reported by patients; Methods: from June 2010 to February 2023, 42 shoulders in 40 paediatric patients were surgically treated for SD at two paediatric orthopaedic departments. All patients were treated using the modified Green Procedure with or without clavicle osteotomy.
