Rationale: Complete decomposition of silicate rock matrices is crucial in determining their isotopic compositions, but acid dissolution in a high-pressure steel-jacketed bomb, which has been the only powerful, effective technique thus far, is time-consuming and expensive. Rock dissolution using ammonium bifluoride (ABF), as described here, is a viable alternative.

Methods: Geological reference materials (GRMs) were digested using ABF in closed Teflon beakers at temperatures of 220/230°C in a convection oven and subsequently treated with HNO . Hf-Sr-Nd were separated and purified using ion-exchange chemistry columns calibrated for 50-2 mg samples. The isotopic compositions of Sr-Nd were measured by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry, while that of Hf by Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, both with normal 10  Ω and gain calibrated 10  Ω amplifiers.

Results: Total procedural blanks of our protocol are 0.5 ng for Sr, 0.2 ng for Nd and <25 pg for Hf. Test runs with GRMs, ranging in composition from basic to felsic and dissolved in ABF, yield accurate Sr/ Sr, Nd/ Nd and Hf/ Hf isotope ratios as compared with those obtained with the bomb dissolution technique. Reproducibilities were comparable, on the order of 10-20 ppm. Our technique allows combined Hf-Sr-Nd isotope analyses of low-mass (50-2 mg) samples.

Conclusions: The ABF digestion is an alternative technique to high-pressure bomb dissolution in matrix decomposition for accurate and reproducible Hf-Nd-Sr isotope analyses of geological samples within a reasonable time (3-4 days), with high sample throughput and low costs in geochemistry and environmental sciences.

Article Synopsis
  • * A new liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed to detect trace levels of various HGPs in retail meat, using a simpler extraction process that requires less meat compared to past methods.
  • * This method demonstrated strong performance in sensitivity and precision, with detection limits ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 ng/g, and did not require complicated sample preparation, making it effective for monitoring HGP exposure in meat products.

This work presents a facile and systematic way to prepare low resistive proton conducting biopolymer electrolyte (BPE) membranes from flaxseed gum (FG) via the solution casting technique. Ammonium fluoride (NHF) ionic salt has been added to the FG matrix and optimized the ionic conductivity of the BPE membrane. The structural and morphological investigations were done to comprehend the ion association phenomenon.

Energy generation today heavily relies on the field of photocatalysis, with many conventional energy generation strategies now superseded by the conversion of solar energy into chemical or thermal energy for a variety of energy-related applications. Global warming has pointed to the urgent necessity of moving away from non-renewable energy sources, with a resulting emphasis on creating the best photocatalysts for effective solar conversion by investigating a variety of material systems and material combinations. The present study explores the influence of morphological changes on the photoelectrochemical activity of zinc oxide nanostructures by exploiting electrodeposition and capping agents to control the growth rates of different ZnO facets and obtain well-defined nanostructures and orientations.

The ability to accurately analyze perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) levels in beef is imperative in order to effectively assess food-safety risks and ensure consumer safety because PFASs are harmful and prevalent in beef. In this study, we developed a rapid and accurate method for the simultaneously determination of the 17 PFASs in beef using dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) and ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), and optimized the mobile phase system, extraction solvent, and d-SPE materials. Samples were finally extracted using 0.
