Background: Healthcare spending is concentrated, with a minority of the population accounting for the majority of healthcare costs.
Methods: The authors modelled the impact of high resource user (HRU) prevention strategies within five years using the validated High Resource User Population Risk Tool.
Results: The authors estimated 758,000 new HRUs in Ontario from 2013-2014 to 2018-2019, resulting in $16.20 billion in healthcare costs (Canadian dollars 2016). The prevention approach that had the largest reduction in HRUs was targeting health-risk behaviours.
Conclusions: This study demonstrates the use of a policy tool by decision makers to support prevention approaches that consider the impact on HRUs and estimated healthcare costs.

Bladder cancer (BLCA) genomic profiling has identified molecular subtypes with distinct clinical characteristics and variable sensitivities to frontline therapy. BLCAs can be categorized into luminal or basal subtypes based on their gene expression. We comprehensively characterized nine human BLCA cell lines (UC3, UC6, UC9, UC13, UC14, T24, SCaBER, RT4V6 and RT112) into molecular subtypes using orthotopic xenograft models.

Microneedle (MN) sensors have great promise for food safety detection, but the rapid preparation of MNs for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors with tunable and homogeneous nanoparticles remains a great challenge. To address this, a SERS sensor of gold nanoparticles@polydopamine@poly(methyl methacrylate) MN (AuNPs@PDA@PMMA-MN) was developed. The extended-Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory was applied to calculate the interaction energy between AuNPs and PDA.

This study aimed to evaluate the cholesterol-regulatory effects of lauric-acid-esterified octacosanol (LEO) and oleic-acid-esterified octacosanol (OEO) compared to their unmodified counterparts and to investigate the underlying mechanisms by partially substituting the fat content in obese C57BL/6J mice induced with a high-fat diet (HFD). Rice bran oil and coconut oil were also investigated as they are rich in oleic acid and lauric acid, respectively. The results showed that all supplemented groups significantly inhibited weight gain induced by the HFD, but the groups treated with esterified octacosanol exhibited a more pronounced effect.

Objectives: Pediatric neurocritical care (PNCC) patients experience high rates of morbidity, but comprehensive follow-up is not universal. We sought to identify predictors of functional decline in these children to guide future resource allocation.
Patients And Methods: We conducted a prospective observational study in a quaternary children's hospital pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) from July 2023 to December 2023.

Urban waterfront areas, which are essential natural resources and highly perceived public areas in cities, play a crucial role in enhancing urban environment. This study integrates deep learning with human perception data sourced from street view images to study the relationship between visual landscape features and human perception of urban waterfront areas, employing linear regression and random forest models to predict human perception along urban coastal roads. Based on aesthetic and distinctiveness perception, urban coastal roads in Xiamen were classified into four types with different emphasis and priorities for improvement.
