It was found that male BALB/c and F1(C57BL/6×DBA/2) mice are able to recognize the structure of a complex food-gathering task, when modeling the information loading similar to intellectual work in humans. There were significant differences between linear and hybrid animals in the pattern of learning process formation and prevailing psychoemotional reactions that accompany information load. Factors of information loading (uncertainty of maze environment and solution of the food-gathering task) had a specific influence on the CNS and manifested in individual non-specific features. The presented experimental conditions (changes in the metabolic and functional state) revealed pronounced intergroup differences in the reaction of the functional zones of the adrenal cortex. In hybrid mice, information loading induced a significant decrease in testosterone level and thickness of the zona reticularis producing precursor hormones. This is probably due to disruption of interactions in the adrenal-thyroid system in hybrid mice, whereas in BALB/c mice, these interactions fully protect from suppression of testosterone production, the main anabolic hormone. The individual characteristics of the response to information loading can be formed as a result of unequal involvement of the psychophysiological, psychological, and autonomic systems responsible for adaptation to environmental factors.

Efficient coding, redundancy reduction, and other information theoretic optimization principles have successfully explained the organization of many biological phenomena, from the physiology of sensory receptive fields to the variability of certain DNA sequence ensembles. Here we examine the hypothesis that behavioral strategies that are optimal for survival must necessarily involve efficient information processing, and ask whether there can be circumstances in which deliberately sacrificing some information can lead to higher utility? To this end, we present an analytically tractable model for a particular instance of a perception-action loop: a creature searching for a randomly moving food source confined to a 1D ring world. The model incorporates the statistical structure of the creature's world, the effects of the creature's actions on that structure, and the creature's strategic decision process.

Three case studies of the GasNet model in discrete domains.

A new neural network model - the GasNet - has been recently reported in the literature, which, in addition to the traditional electric type, point-to-point communication between units, also uses communication through a diffilsable chemical modulator. Here we assess the applicability of this model in three different scenarios, the XOR problem, a food gathering task for a simulated robot, and a docking task for a virtual spaceship. All of them represent discrete domains, a contrast with the one where the GasNet was originally introduced, which had an essentially continuous nature.
