Background: With this study, we aim to determine the associations of the different categories of the body mass index (BMI) with activities of daily living (ADL) and cognitive performance in two different populations living in the community; Colombian and South Korean older adults.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of two surveys separately; The Survey on Health, Well-Being, and Aging in Colombia (SABE) (n = 23,343) and the Korean Longitudinal Study of aging (KLoSA) (n = 4556). Participants older than 50 years were selected from rural and urban areas achieving a representative sample. Here we investigated the association between BMI categories with function using zero-inflated negative binomial regressions, and with cognition using logistic regression models.

Results: After adjustment, in Colombia, underweight was associated with an impaired score on the Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) and worse performance in the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Also, being overweight was associated with a better score on the MMSE and the IADL. For both outcomes education level significantly influenced the predictions. In South Korea, there were no significant associations for cognition, IADL, or basic activities of daily living (BADL).

Conclusions: In the Colombian population, underweight, was associated with reduced cognitive performance and daily functioning. Additionally, being overweight but not obese was associated with better cognition and daily functioning. In South Korea, there were no significant associations between BMI and cognition, IADL, or BADL.

Background: Microfragmented adipose tissue has been proposed for intra-articular treatment of knee osteoarthritis. There are little data comparing the outcomes of treatment between microfragmented adipose tissue and other biological treatments.

Purpose: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing microfragmented aspirated fat injections to other orthobiologics, hyaluronic acid, and corticosteroid injections for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.

Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.

Background: This study responds to the urgent need for automated and reliable methods to detect cognitive impairments on a large scale. It leverages natural language processing (NLP) techniques to predict dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) using clinical notes from electronic health records (EHR).

Method: Our study used an EHR dataset from Massachusetts General Brigham, which included clinical notes from a 2-year period (2017-2018) covering 12 types of patient encounters.

Neuropsychology and Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory (LANNEC), Physiopathology Department - ICBM, Neuroscience and East Neuroscience Departments, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

Background: The most common and prevalent dementia worldwide is Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD is a continuum composed of Subjective Cognitive Impairment (SCD), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer's Disease dementia (ADD) stage. One of the main clinical variables in patients with dementia is performance in functional capacity since its alterations are associated with poor prognosis and disease progression.

Background: Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI) and functional ability are two non-cognitive markers of dementia. To date, little is known about the impact of functional ability on the clinical manifestation of MBI. Using data from the Australian population-based PATH Through Life Study we examined the impact of functional ability on MBI.

Alzheimers Dement

Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA.

Historically, screening for incidence of AD-related MCI or conversion from MCI to AD dementia has relied on cognitive, activities of daily living, and brain imaging measures. Limitations of this diagnostic approach include dependency on education and language, time-consuming and costly measures, and long-term monitoring. Emerging studies suggest that non-tremor motor dysfunction in dementias is known to be highly associated with AD biomarkers, with signs of cognitive decline visible in gait and hand movement at various stages of the illness.
