Great progress has been made during the last decades in understanding visual systems of arthropods living today. Thus it seems worthwhile to review what is known about structure and function of the eyes of trilobites, the most important group of marine arthropods during the Paleozoic. There are three types of compound eyes in trilobites. The oldest and most abundant is the so-called holochroal eye. The sensory system represents a typical apposition eye, and all units are covered by one cornea in common. The so-called abathochroal eye (only in eodiscid trilobites) consists of small lenses, each individually covered by a thin cuticular cornea. The schizochroal eye is represented just in the suborder Phacopina, and probably is a highly specialized visual system. We discuss the calcitic character of trilobite lenses, the phylogenetic relevance of the existence of crystalline cones in trilobites, and consider adaptations of trilobite's compound eyes to different ecological constraints. The aim of this article is to give a resumé of what is known so far about trilobite vision, and to open perspectives to what still might be done.

Inspired by ancient trilobites, novel curved microlens arrays (CMLAs) were designed. Direct, fast, and low-cost CMLAs with two focal planes were fabricated using ultraprecision machining technology and hot embossing technology. The systematics of 37 new species of Devonian Harpetidae from the central and eastern Anti-Atlas Mountains, Morocco, are described. The new material comes from the Dra-Tafilalet region and the province of Tata. A cladistic study was undertaken involving 138 taxa with the objective of assigning the new taxa to the appropriate genera, which are, as far as possible, monophyletic.

The trilobite hypostome is a biomineralized ventral plate that covers the mouth, but its evolutionary origin remains controversial. The labrum is a lobe-like structure that can take on variety of shapes in front of the mouth in arthropods, while the anterior sclerite refers to a cuticular plate articulated to the anterior margin of the head in some Cambrian arthropods. Here I present a perspective that views the trilobite hypostome as a fusion of the anterior sclerite and the labrum based on anatomical, topological, and developmental evidence.

Arthropods typically possess two types of eyes-compound eyes, and the ocellar, so called 'median eyes'. Only trilobites, an important group of arthropods during the Palaeozoic, seem not to possess median eyes.
