Metal-based nanoentities, apart from being indispensable research tools, have found extensive use in the industrial and biomedical arena. Because their biological impacts are governed by factors such as size, shape, and composition, such issues must be taken into account when these materials are incorporated into multi-component ensembles for clinical applications. The size and shape (rods, wires, sheets, tubes, and cages) of metallic nanostructures influence cell viability by virtue of their varied geometry and physicochemical interactions with mammalian cell membranes. The anisotropic properties of nonspherical metal-based nanoarchitectures render them exciting candidates for biomedical applications. Here, the size-, shape-, and composition-dependent properties of nonspherical metal-based nanoarchitectures are reviewed in the context of their potential applications in cancer diagnostics and therapeutics, as well as, in regenerative medicine. Strategies for the synthesis of nonspherical metal-based nanoarchitectures and their cytotoxicity and immunological profiles are also comprehensively appraised.

Non-spherical metal-based and carbon-based nanostructures have found applications in every facet of scientific endeavors, including engineering and biomedical fields. These nanostructures attract attention because of their biocompatibility and negligible cytotoxicity. Chemical and physical methods have been used for synthesizing earlier generations of metal-based and carbon-based nanostructures with variable architectures, including nanorods, nanowires, nanodots and nanosheets.

Extraordinary progress in medicinal inorganic chemistry in the past few years led to the rational design of novel platinum compounds, as well as nonplatinum metal-based antitumor agents, including organotin compounds, whose activity is not based on unrepairable interaction with DNA. To overcome poor solubility and toxicity problems that limited the application of these compounds numerous delivering systems were used (Lila et al. in Biol Pharm Bull 37:206-211, 2014; Yue and Cao in Curr Cancer Drug Targets 16:480-488, 2016; Duan et al.

The mean primary diameter (d) of nanoparticles (NPs) is commonly used as the best basis to assess the dose metric for expressing the toxicity of spherical NPs. However, d bears no relevance for nonspherical NPs. In the present study, the mean surface area to volume ratio, applicable to both spherical and nonspherical NPs, was used to replace d given the aim of obtaining the best dose metric (volume, surface area, or number) of differently shaped metallic NPs in vivo (9 organisms) and in vitro (6 mammalian cell lines).

Magnetic materials and noble metal-based multifunctional hybrids have attracted much attention recently due to their unique properties and potential applications in a variety of fields. However, substantial challenges remain to directly obtain water-soluble hybrids with well-defined structures and to directly combine magnetic nanoparticles with nonspherical noble metals. We describe here for the first time a simple solvothermal method to synthesize a series of novel water-soluble nanohybrids composed of shape-tuned Ag cores and a Fe(3)O(4) shell.
