Background: Cough and sputum are the major symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). However, the relationship between these symptoms and treatment for TB is not fully understood. The aim of this prospective study was to clarify the cough- and sputum-related quality of life (QOL) in patients with pulmonary TB before and after initiation of treatment.

Background: Increased sputum production is an important feature of COPD, in which a large amount of secretions stagnated in the respiratory lumen may aggravate airflow limitation, impair airway mucociliary transport, and cause recurrent respiratory infection and, hence, acute exacerbations of the diseases. There is evidence that airway mucus hypersecretion is associated with the severity and prognosis of COPD, but the symptoms are generally difficult to treat.
Methods: In an open, non-controlled study, we examined the effect of the anticholinergic agent tiotropium on airway mucus hypersecretion in 22 COPD patients.

Introduction: After intensive tobacco control efforts in recent decades, the prevalence of active smoking has decreased. However, the hazardous effect of indirect exposure to cigarette smoke is often underestimated, especially in children. We aimed to investigate the effect of parental smoking on the respiratory morbidity of the children of parents who smoke by evaluating the relationship between parental smoking behavior and children's respiratory symptoms.

In this baseline study, part of a cohort study to clarify the effect of toner exposure on the respiratory system, we surveyed 803 male toner workers and 802 referents with regard to their subjective respiratory symptoms and chest X-ray results. We also examined individual exposure history, current working conditions, and personal exposure levels to toner. There was a significantly higher prevalence of "coughing and sputum" related complaints among toner-exposed workers in the 30 and 40-year age groups.
