Introduction: In France, soccer is the most popular sport, which today attracts a huge television audience with millions of spectators in the case of international competitions. During certain games with European top clubs, the attendance of adult emergencies is impacted. However, the impact of international soccer competitions on pediatric emergency department (PED) activity has not been evaluated.
Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of attendance in the PED of a tertiary university hospital in Nancy (France) during the UEFA 2016 championship and the FIFA 2018 World Cup. Games were represented by 2.5-h blocks and the tournament period was compared with the same period in the previous year.
Results: Considering all games, we did not observe an impact of PED attendance. The admission rate was significantly lower during the final phase (11.1 patients per match vs. 13.9, P=0.037). We observed a decrease in consultations for trauma (4.9 vs. 6.7, P=0.006). The effects were higher during games involving the national French team, with a decrease in less severe admissions (P=0.034), attendance of older children (P=0.016), and the presence of the father as accompanying adult (P=0.002). During the two final matches, we observed a decrease of 14% in the total activity.
Conclusion: We found significant differences in PED attendance during two international soccer tournaments. It would be interesting to study this effect in countries other than France or in countries with different sport habits.

Although the corticosteroid betamethasone is routinely administered to accelerate lung and cardiovascular maturation in the preterm fetus prior to birth, and use of delayed cord clamping (DCC) is recommended at birth by professional bodies, it is unknown whether antenatal betamethasone alters perinatal pulmonary or systemic arterial blood flow accompaniments of DCC. To address this issue, preterm fetal lambs [gestation 127 (1) days, term = 147 days] with (n = 10) or without (n = 10) antenatal betamethasone treatment were acutely instrumented under general anaesthesia with flow probes to obtain left (LV) and right ventricular (RV) outputs, major central arterial blood flows and shunt flow across both the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale (FO). After delivery, lambs underwent initial ventilation for 2 min prior to DCC.

Introduction: Congenital lumbar kyphosis is present in about 15% of patients with myelomeningocele. Worsening of deformity with complications such as chronic skin ulcers and bone exposure is common. In patients under 8 years of age, treatment becomes even more challenging: in addition to resecting the apex of the kyphotic deformity, we should ideally stabilize the spine with fixation methods that do not interrupt the growth of the rib cage, associated with the challenging pelvic fixation in this population.

Introduction: Although the administration of activated charcoal (AC) is considered safe, the associated risk of pulmonary aspiration explains certain reluctance of physicians to use this procedure. The objective of this study was to analyse the rate of pulmonary aspiration in children receiving AC after accidental ingestion of a toxic substance.
Methods: We carried out a substudy of a multicentre prospective registry-based cohort study including children presenting with acute poisoning to 58 paediatric emergency department (EDs) members of the Spanish Society of Pediatric Emergency Medicine between 2008 and 2022 on certain previously designated days.

Objectives: The link between allergic diseases and deficits in children's neurodevelopment has been suggested, but it remains unclear regarding the allergy-related effects on social-emotional development in early life. Our study aimed to explore the association between allergic diseases and social-emotional development during infancy using a prospective study.
Methods: 937 infants at 6 months were recruited from two community hospitals in Shanghai, of which 805 infants followed up at 12 months.
